GAME NOTES: The Monmouth Hawks will try to finally break through against Seton Hall, as they visit the Prudential Center for a non-conference tilt against the Pirates.

The Hawks began their first season as a member of the Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference with an 88-84 win at Hofstra, but they fell to 1-1 on Tuesday with a 79-73 setback to Pennsylvania on their home floor. Monmouth will have to overcome inexperience in 2013-14 as it returns only 31.2 percent of its scoring from a season ago and does not have a single senior on its roster. Coach King Rice owns a 23-42 overall record at Monmouth.

Seton Hall opened up its campaign with back-to-back decisions over Niagara (83-72) and Kent State (78-76) before it was defeated, 77-74, in double- overtime by Mercer in Macon on Wednesday. Coach Kevin Willard's unit has been able to convert 46.6 percent of its field goal tries through its first three games, though it is averaging almost five more turnovers than assists per outing. The Pirates will be looking to regain momentum versus the Hawks before they head to Brooklyn to take on Oklahoma in the Coaches vs. Cancer Classic on Friday.

Rice will try to be the first coach in school history to defeat Seton Hall as the Hawks are 0-11 versus the Pirates all-time. Seton Hall downed Monmouth, 87-72, in the 2009-10 campaign for its most recent win in the Garden State rivalry.

The Hawks were limited to just 35.2 percent shooting from the field and missed some easy opportunities as they went just 16-of-29 at the charity stripe in their loss to the Quakers. Monmouth got off to a great start as it took a 10- point lead after three minutes of play, but it was outscored by 18 points over the next 17 minutes. Andrew Nicholas scored a team-high 19 points on 6-of-18 efficiency from the floor while rookie point guard Justin Robinson added 12 points with four assists against seven turnovers. Junior guard Deon Jones fouled out after 26 minutes of action. Jones was sensational before being disqualified, knocking down 7-of-8 field goal tries en route to 17 points which he accompanied with eight boards. Monmouth has a pair of talented reserve guards in Josh James and Max DiLeo, however it lacks any capable scorers on the front line.

Seton Hall nearly defeated Mercer its last time out even though it sank only 5-of-20 shots from behind the 3-point line while also finishing 17-of-30 at the free-throw line. Senior swingman Fuquan Edwin did his best to spearhead the charge with a career-high 35 points. None of his teammates scored in double- figures, although Eugene Teague grabbed 12 rebounds and only missed a double- double by a single point. Texas transfer Sterling Gibbs had his worst outing in a SHU uniform. The 6-foot-2 guard still carries impressive averages of 17.3 points, 5.7 rebounds and 4.7 assists per game with Monday's contest. Freshman guard Jaren Sina was expected to be a big time contributor right away, but he was held scoreless in the team's only loss.

The Pirates should continue their streak of success against the Hawks with ease. Willard's team will be focused to get back on track and Monmouth's lack of experience will lead to a high number of mistakes that will diminish its hopes of going over the .500 mark.
