GAME NOTES: A BracketBuster matchup brings two struggling teams together as the Lamar Cardinals host the Texas State Bobcats at the Montagne Center on Saturday night.

Texas State most recently suffered a 73-62 loss at the hands of UTSA. The loss was the fifth in a row for the Bobcats coming after a three-game win streak that started with UTSA back in mid-January. The Bobcats are just 7-19 on the season and a miserable 3-11 in the Western Athletic Conference.

Lamar is coming off a 74-63 loss to Nicholls. The loss was the third in a row for the Cardinals and left them 0-2 after the first two games of a current five-game homestand. The shortest period between wins for Lamar this season is eight games, as the team is an ugly 3-23 overall, with just one win in 14 Southland Conference affairs.

The Cardinals lead the all-time series 29-25 and took the last meeting 81-65 in San Marcos last season.

In the loss to UTSA, Matt Staff recorded a double-double with 18 points and 13 rebounds. Phil Hawkins and Joel Wright scored 13 points each to join Staff in double-figure scoring. Combined, the team shot just 37.9 percent from the field and hit on just 6-of-28 attempts from 3-point range. Wright is the squads top scorer this season averaging 17.2 ppg, while also leading the team in rebounding as he pulls down 6.7 per game. Staff is the only other Bobcat averaging in double-figure scoring with 10.9 ppg and is second in rebounding with 5.8 per game. Defensively the squad really struggles, allowing opponents to shoot 46.4 percent from the field and score 76.9 ppg. The Bobcats are the 337th ranked scoring defense in the nation which leaves only eight teams in the country that allow more points per game.

Amos Wilson led the Cardinals with 23 points and seven rebounds in the loss to Nicholl. Rhon Mitchell had a double-double with 14 points and 10 rebounds while Stan Brown led all players in rebounding with 11. Brown is the only Lamar player averaging in double-figure scoring this season with 11.1 ppg, shooting just under 50.0 percent from the field, and also leads the team in rebounding with 7.2 per game. Mitchell is second in both categories with 9.9 ppg and 5.1 rpg. Lamar's play on both ends of the field has been very poor as the Cardinals allow 75.9 ppg (331st nationally) and score just 58.3 ppg (333rd nationally). Those statistics leave Lamar with the second worst scoring margin in the nation (-17.6).

While both teams play very poor on the defensive end, Lamar lacks any real weapons on offense to keep up with the Bobcats.

Sports Network Predicted Outcome: Texas State 68, Lamar 62
