GAME NOTES: The North Texas Mean Green try to run their win streak to four in a row tonight, as they tangle with the BYU Cougars in non-conference play at the Marriott Center.

North Texas, which won only twice through the first five games of 2013-14, was most recently in action over the weekend versus Southeastern Louisiana and came up with a 75-61 home victory. The team is a perfect 4-0 in Denton, but only 1-1 in true road dates.

Meanwhile, the Cougars are a team that won four straight games coming out of the chute but have since split four outings. The team bounced back from a 75-62 loss to nationally-ranked Wichita State last week with an 85-74 victory over Utah State Saturday at EnergySolutions Arena in Salt Lake City.

The last meeting between the teams took place in 1989, with the Cougars posting a 97-68 win at home to move to 2-0 all-time versus North Texas.

The North Texas defense held the visitors to only seven made field goals in the first half at the Super Pit on Saturday night, allowing the Mean Green to lead by as many as 18 points in the second half before settling on the 14- point victory. Alzee Williams scored 18 points, Jordan Williams 15 to go along with 10 rebounds. Also scoring in double figures were Chris Jones and Keith Coleman with 14 and 10 points, respectively, while Colin Voss stepped up with a game-high 12 rebounds.

Alzee Williams accounts for 16.3 ppg after starting all eight games for North Texas, while Jordan Williams is contributing 12.3 ppg as the only other double-digit scorer. Jordan Williams, who has started just one game thus far, is credited with a team-high 6.9 rpg as North Texas surpasses the competition on the glass by 3.5 rpg.

BYU allowed the Aggies to knock down an impressive 59.4 percent from the floor in the first half, including 5-of-11 behind the 3-point line, but over the final 20 minutes the Cougars cracked down in both departments, allowing the team to secure the double-digit win. Tyler Haws led all scorers with 21 points on 6-of-13 shooting from the field and a perfect 8-of-8 at the free-throw line, followed by Matt Carlino and Eric Mika with 18 and 15 points, respectively. Frank Bartley pitched in with 14 points and Kyle Collinsworth filled his stat line with seven points, 13 rebounds and eight assists.

Despite shooting only 54.8 percent at the charity stripe, Collinsworth (11.3 ppg) is still a huge threat for the Cougars whenever he is on the floor as he accounts for 9.0 rpg and close to 6.0 apg, both of which pace BYU. The team is again led on offense by Haws who is dropping in 23.7 ppg, although his perimeter efforts (.389) are not quite up to par and because of that the Cougars are shooting a collective 33.9 percent beyond the arc.

Very few teams are able to come out of the Marriott Center with a positive experience, and as long as Haws and Carlino are still around for the Cougars that will likely remain the case for opposing teams.
