NCAA Game Summary - Southern Utah at Eastern Washington

(Thursday, January 23rd)

Final Score: Eastern Washington 90, Southern Utah 83

Cheney, WA (SportsNetwork.com) - Tyler Harvey scored a career-high 36 points as the Eastern Washington Eagles slipped by the Southern Utah Thunderbirds, 90-83, in Big Sky Conference action on Reese Court.

Harvey set a school and Big Sky record by converting all 20 of his free-throw attempts for the Eagles (8-10, 3-4 Big Sky) as they snapped a two-game slide. Harvey, who knocked down both of his 3-point tries and was 7-of-9 from the floor overall, also pulled down eight rebounds which was second to Venky Jois who delivered 19 points and nine boards for the hosts.

Also scoring in double figures for EWU were Ognjen Miljkovic and Parker Kelly with 13 and 12 points, respectively.

The Thunderbirds (1-15, 0-7), losers of 15 in a row, were led by Trey Kennedy with 22 points and six assists, followed by A.J. Hess with 17 points and nine boards.

Southern Utah shot an impressive 53.3 percent from the field in the first half, but at the same time the visitors were outscored at the free-throw line, 13-4, leaving the Thunderbirds with just a 39-38 advantage at the break.

In the second half SUU again shot the ball very well from the field at a 55.2 percent clip, but the physical play by the Thunderbirds resulted in 25-of-30 shooting at the charity stripe by the Eagles.

Overall, Eastern Washington feasted at the free-throw line as it outscored Southern Utah by a massive 38-11 margin.

Southern Utah's only win of the season came in the opener against Arizona Christian (85-78), a program which competes at the NAIA level. The last victory for the Thunderbirds versus another Division I foe was a narrow 73-72 final against Cal State Northridge on Feb. 23, 2013 during the annual BracketBuster event.

Despite the scoring outburst tonight, matching their season-high, the Thunderbirds are still one of the lowest-scoring programs in the nation with just 55.8 ppg.
