GAME NOTES: The Miami-Florida Hurricanes take to the road for the first time this season, and in the process take on a first-ever opponent as they clash with the College of Charleston tonight at TD Arena.

Miami was actually stunned in its season opener back on Nov. 8 when it bowed to St. Francis Brooklyn at home in overtime, 66-62, and while the team has posted a couple of wins since, it is far from the powerhouse program it was a season ago. The Hurricanes won their most recent outing last Thursday by an 84-69 score versus Texas Southern, but just three days earlier had to go to overtime to take care of Georgia Southern, 81-80.

As for the Cougars, they've won just one of their first three games, that being a narrow 83-82 decision over Charlotte at home last week. The season- opening loss to Louisville on the road (70-48) was certainly understandable, but bowing to UNC Asheville this past Friday had to have been hard to swallow for Charleston.

Against Texas Southern, the Hurricanes had six players score in double figures, led by James Kelly who tallied 17 points and pulled down seven rebounds off the bench. Donnavan Kirk paced the starters with 15 points, but the more impressive effort came from Rion Brown who came up an assist shy of a triple-double as he tallied 13 points and pulled down 11 rebounds. Manu Lecomte accounted for 12 points, Davon Reed 11 and Garrius Adams 10 points in the double-digit win.

Shooting 60.6 percent from the field through three games, Kirk is the top scoring option for the Hurricanes with his 16.3 ppg, while Brown comes in at 13.0 ppg and offsets his mere 34.3 percent field goal accuracy with 8.3 rpg and 13 dishes while playing 40.3 minutes per outing. As a team, Miami has been slow to warm up from behind the 3-point line where they are just 28.6 percent accurate at this stage.

The Cougars scored the first points of the game against UNC Asheville, but it wasn't long before the hosts found themselves trailing by double digits in the first half and down 31-21 at the break after shooting only 8-of-31 from the floor. Charleston hurt itself with a miserable 1-of-13 showing beyond the arc in the period as well.

Charleston was able to get the game to overtime, but in the extra frame the squad made a total of just two field goals in nine tries, en route to the setback. Adjehi Baru registered a double-double with 12 points and 13 rebounds, while Canyon Barry and Joe Chealey accounted for 18 and 10 points, respectively.

Barry may lead the team in scoring with 18.0 ppg, but his 53.8 percent showing at the charity stripe and a mere four assists against 10 turnovers make it tough for him to stay on the floor in pressure situations. Chealey (12.0 ppg) and Willis Hall (10.3 ppg) also have the ability to score for a unit that is connecting on only 57.9 percent at the charity stripe.

Miami should be able to win this game on past reputation alone, but seeing as how these Hurricanes don't pack as much punch, the Cougars might actually make things interesting.
