NCAA Game Summary - UCLA at Stanford

(Saturday, February 22nd)

Final Score: Stanford 83, (23) UCLA 74

Stanford, CA (SportsNetwork.com) - Chasson Randle scored 26 points and led an impressive perimeter shooting display that carried Stanford to an 83-74 win over No. 23 UCLA at Maples Pavilion.

Randle made good on a career-best seven 3-pointers in 10 attempts and the Cardinal (18-8, 9-5 Pac-12) finished a scorching 11-of-20 from beyond the arc to avenge a 91-74 defeat to the Bruins on Jan. 23.

"We haven't had a team shoot this well against us all year," UCLA head coach Steve Alford said. "Sometimes you have to say congrats to the other team. They played extremely well, and we couldn't match that tonight."

Josh Huestis added 22 points on an 8-from-12 shooting rate in Stanford's fifth victory in six games, with Anthony Brown chipping in 18 for the Cardinal.

UCLA (21-6, 10-4) had won four straight and seven of eight coming in, but trailed most of the way and failed to come up with key stops all throughout. Norman Powell and Zach LaVine each had 14 points in the loss.

"I thought UCLA came in as hot as any team in the country, and I thought our guys came prepared and won a real hard-fought game," Cardinal head coach Johnny Dawkins remarked.

The Bruins entered the matchup fielding one of the nation's most potent offenses, but Stanford was the team knocking down shots with authority early on. The Cardinal hit at a 54 percent clip in the first half and sank six 3- pointers -- including four from Randle -- to take a 38-30 lead at the break.

Stanford gained the upper hand by virtue of a 12-0 run midway through the period. Randle and Robbie Lemons each buried treys during the surge, which Huestis capped with a putback that staked the Cardinal to a 30-18 advantage with 6:41 left in the frame.

"[Randle] got us off to a really good start," said Dawkins. "The early part of the game where everybody is settling in and feeling their way through it, I thought he came out ready from the tip and got us off to a good start, which was something that we needed."

UCLA, which was held without a field goal for more than 6 1/2 minutes at one stretch, still trailed by double digits late in the half before a Tony Parker 3-point play cut the margin to eight at intermission.

The Cardinal continued to score at will in the second half, with the differential reaching 14 points after Stefan Nastic followed a Brown trey with an inside bucket that put Stanford up 58-44 with 13:23 left to play.

UCLA then put together its best sequence of the game, outscoring the Cardinal 13-2 over the next 3 1/2 minutes to get back in it. Parker dropped in six points during the charge, which pulled the Bruins within 60-57 midway through the second half.

Stanford again had an answer, however. Brown and Randle drained triples on back-to-back possessions, igniting an 8-0 run that stretched the lead back to 11 with under 7 1/2 minutes remaining.

The Bruins scored the next five points to stay within striking distance, and trimmed the deficit to four with 2:50 left after LaVine was fouled on a 3- point try and made all three bonus shots to make it a 72-68 game.

UCLA's offense went cold thereafter, though, enabling Stanford to record seven of the next nine points to take a comfortable 79-70 edge into the final minute.

Game Notes

Stanford, which previously knocked off Connecticut and Oregon when both were in the top 25 earlier this season, has defeated three ranked teams in the same campaign for the first time since it reached the NCAA Sweet 16 in 2007-08 ... The Cardinal had lost four straight to UCLA since a 60-59 decision at Palo Alto on Dec. 29, 2011 ... Parker, who had a career-high 22 points in the teams' first meeting, finished with 13 on 6-of-8 shooting ... The Cardinal are now 17-2 this season when scoring 70 points or more.
