Legendary basketball coach Don Meyer dies

Aberdeen, SD (SportsNetwork.com) - Don Meyer, one of the winningest coaches in men's college basketball, died Sunday. He was 69 years old.

The former coach at Lipscomb University in Tennessee and Division II Northern State in South Dakota recently went into hospice care at his home in Aberdeen, South Dakota.

Meyer had battled liver cancer and returned to coaching after being critically injured in a 2008 automobile accident that resulted in the loss of part of his left leg.

Just four months after the accident and subsequent cancer diagnosis in 2009, Meyer surpassed Bobby Knight as the winningest coach in NCAA history. He retired after the 2009-10 season with 923 wins before Duke's Mike Krzyzewski eventually broke his record for career victories.

Meyer began his coaching career at Hamline University in Minnesota in 1972. He left after three seasons with a record of 37-41 for Lipscomb and guided the Bison for 24 years, leading them to an NAIA title in 1986.

The Bison were 665-179 under Meyer, who went to Northern State in 1999 and completed his career there with a mark of 221-104.

Meyer is a member of the Tennessee Sports Hall of Fame, the South Dakota Sports Hall of Fame and both Halls of Fame at Lipscomb and Northern State.
