GAME NOTES: The Wofford Terriers take to the road to battle the Appalachian State Mountaineers in a Southern Conference clash at the Holmes Center on Saturday afternoon. : Wofford has won its last seven contests, including a 95-60 victory in a non- conference matchup with the Hiwassee College Tigers on Monday night. The Terriers are currently in third place in the SoCon.

Appalachian State took down Samford on Thursday night, 74-68, but is still just 4-6 in its last 10 outings. The Mountaineers are tied for eighth place in the conference with Georgia Southern.

The Mountaineers lead the all-time series, 23-15. This is the first meeting between the two teams this season. In their only matchup last year, the Terriers won, 50-49, in Spartanburg, which snapped a five-game win streak by the Mountaineers in the series.

Wofford easily handled Hiwassee College earlier in the week. Justin Gordan led the way for the Terriers with 18 points, while Karl Cochran and Spencer Collins each chipped in with 14, in a game in which 13 Terriers ended up in the scoring column. Leading comfortably at halftime, 43-25, the Terriers dropped in 52 points in the second half to put the game away.

Despite the huge output on Monday night, Wofford has displayed a lackluster scoring offense this season, posting just 68.9 ppg on 45.2 percent efficiency from the field, but it has turned things around during its current win streak, averaging 77.7 ppg. Luckily, its outstanding scoring defense (64.0 ppg, tops in the SoCon) has been consistent throughout. Cochran (15.2 ppg, 5.2 rpg) and Collins (13.6 ppg) split the duties as the team's go-to scoring option, with Cochran having drained 51 3-pointers at a 38.9 percent clip. Lee Skinner acts as an anchor in the frontcourt with 11.0 ppg and 8.6 rpg.

Tommy Spagnolo registered a double-double with 20 points and 10 rebounds as the Mountaineers took down Samford. Tab Hamilton added 18 points, followed by Ty Toney and Chris Burgess with 14 points apiece and before fouling out, Michael Obacha contributed a game-high 12 rebounds. Trailing 34-30 at the break, the Mountaineers turned it around with an astounding 71.4 percent effort from the field in the second and also outscored the Bulldogs at the free-throw line over the final 20 minutes, 12-6.

Hamilton is the team's active leader in scoring with 13.7 ppg on just 38.6 percent shooting from the field. Jay Canty was its top scorer through five games, but he has been sidelined for the majority of the season with a hand injury. Mike Neal is the only other Appalachian State player to average double digits with 10.3 ppg, to go with a team-best 80 assists. Tevin Baskin (9.4 ppg) and Burgess (8.4 ppg) have also been contributing for the Mountaineers. Obacha leads the way on the glass with 9 rpg. As a squad, they are scoring 70.8 ppg and giving up 73.2 ppg. They shoot just 42.3 percent from the field and 31.5 percent from 3-point range, both at or near the bottom of the SoCon. They also have trouble defending the perimeter, allowing teams to knock down treys at a league-worst 38 percent.

The Terriers have been quite hot of late and have been scoring at torrid pace during their current winning streak. The Mountaineers have been giving up more than they are scoring, so Wofford may present a challenge to the home team.
