GAME NOTES: The Milwaukee Panthers try to get the new month off on the right foot as they battle the Oakland Golden Grizzlies in Horizon League action at the Klotsche Center.

After starting off the 2013-14 season so well in non-conference play, the Panthers have been beaten up a bit by the rest of the Horizon League and are currently a game under .500 in those outings (4-5). However, Milwaukee did close out the month of January on a positive note with a 68-64 triumph over Wright State three nights ago to snap a three-game slide.

As for the Golden Grizzlies, they were just in action on Friday night and managed to slip by Youngstown State by a single point, 86-85, at home. The victory was the second in a row for an Oakland squad that is now an even 4-4 in league play as well.

The Panthers won the first meeting of the season between the teams by a score of 84-75 in Oakland last month, which means the all-time series now stands at 7-1 in favor of Milwaukee as a result.

Kahlil Felder played the hero for the Grizzlies as he nailed a couple of free throws in the final seconds to push the hosts to a one-point win over YSU two nights ago. Felder not only tallied 19 points, he also handed out a game-high 12 assists, while Corey Petros had a double-double of his own with 15 points and 10 boards. Leading the way in the scoring department was Travis Bader who dropped in 26 points on 5-of-13 shooting behind the 3-point line.

Bader leads the team in scoring with 19.4 ppg, with the bulk of his points coming from behind the 3-point line where he has become one of the most prolific long-distance shooters in the college basketball history. In fact, with three more 3-pointers, Bader will have 458 for his career and overtake J.J. Reddick (457) for the all-time NCAA record in that department. Petros accounts for 14.1 ppg and Duke Mondy another 11.9 ppg.

Kyle Kelm and Jordan Aaron both scored 13 points for the Panthers as the squad slipped by Wright State at home a few nights ago. Austin Arians and Malcolm Moore each chipped in 12 points, while Steve McWhorter had 10 and six assists for a squad that shot just 3-of-15 behind the 3-point line and turned the ball over 17 times. At the defensive end of the floor, Milwaukee did force 16 miscues and limit the Raiders to 41.1 percent accuracy from the field.

In conference play this season the Panthers are scoring just 67.7 ppg, down from their 71.0 ppg overall. However, while the squad has limited foes to 70.8 ppg through 23 outings, that number has jumped to 74.3 ppg as Horizon opponents shooting 78.4 percent at the free-throw line. Aaron is responsible for 15.2 ppg and Matt Tiby 12.2 ppg, while McWhorter pitches in with 10.7 ppg and is first with 39 assists in those nine bouts.

Bader will be gunning for the record in this one, but that doesn't mean he'll be able to carry the Golden Grizzlies into the winner's circle, especially when you consider how poorly Oakland has played on the road this season.
