GAMES NOTES: In a consolation matchup of the Paradise Jam the Loyola Marymount Lions will take on the Marist Red Foxes at the Sports and Fitness Center in St. Thomas.

The Lions were set down in the opening round of the tournament Friday night as they were handed a 90-81 defeat by the Panthers of Northern Iowa. Anthony Ireland scored 24 points and Gabe Levin had a double-double but it wasn't enough in the end. The setback ended a nice beginning to the year for the Lions, who had ran out to a 4-0 start before losing on Friday.

A poor offensive showing yet again doomed Marist as it was knocked down, 68-43, by Maryland in the opening round on Friday. The loss was the fifth- straight to start the year for the Red Foxes and the third to come in a game where they scored fewer than 50 points.

The Lions have taken both previous meetings from the Red Foxes, including a 131-107 victory in 1988 which still stands as the program record for Marist for most points combined in a single game.

Evan Payne nailed 3-of-5 shots from beyond the arc and added 22 points off the bench while Levin secured 14 rebounds to go with 10 points on Friday for the Lions. The Lions were uneven defensively in the game as they trailed 53-36 at halftime after allowing 30 points from beyond the arc in the first half. Despite holding the Panthers to just seven field goals in the final 20 minutes, the Lions' rally came up short.

The offensive end of the floor has been kind to the Lions this season. Loyola Marymount is scoring 84.2 points per game and netting 47.3 percent of their shots from the floor. However the showing against the Panthers exposed how weak the Lions can be on defense, as they are surrendering 81 points per game on 47.4 percent shooting. Ireland (18.0 ppg, 6.0 apg) is a potent scorer that is used to hanging up big points totals. The 5-foot-10 guard had a season-high in points against Northern Iowa and has had a pair of 10-assist efforts already. Levin (13.6 ppg, 8.8 rpg) is the second best offensive option as well as the top rebounder. Ben Dickinson (12.0 ppg, 4.8 rpg) adds depth on the boards and scoring, while Payne (13.9 ppg) is a reliable asset off the bench.

Against the Terrapins the Red Foxes struggled mightily to get points on the board. Marist had only 13 total field goals in the contest, while shooting at a 26 percent clip from the field. Chavaughn Lewis netted 13 points but hit just 4-of-13 shots from the field, while turning the ball over six times.

As it might be expected for a team without a win, the Red Foxes have often suffered from poor shooting nights. Marist is scoring only ppg and netting percent from the floor, ranking among the five worst teams in the country. Marist hasn't been much better defensively. Lewis (14.6 ppg) is one of only player scoring in double figures and one of four scoring more than six points per game. Although Lewis is putting up big numbers on the scoreboard he has not done so efficiently, netting less than 40 percent of his attempts from the field. Fellow guard Khallid Hart (9.4 ppg) is the second best scorer, while Jay Bowie (6.6 ppg, 4.6 rpg) and Adam Kemp (6.3 ppg, 6.8 rpg) lead the way down low.

With a prolific scorer like Ireland on their side, the Lions will have more than enough firepower to take down the Red Foxes.
