NCAA Game Summary - Troy vs. Western Illinois

(Friday, December 20)

Final Score: Western Illinois 61, Troy 58

Logan, UT (SportsNetwork.com) - A pair of free throws by Jabari Sandifer with six seconds remaining broke the fourth tie of the game and helped lead the Western Illinois Leathernecks to a 61-58 win over the Troy Trojans as part of the annual Basketball Travelers Classic at the Dee Glen Smith Spectrum.

Sandifer, who added another free throw in the final moments in order to give the Leathernecks (5-6) some separation, shot only 1-of-6 from the floor as he finished with five points off the bench. Adam Link led the way with 24 points and seven rebounds for WIU, followed by Garret Covington and Tate Stensgaard with 14 and 13 points, respectively.

The Trojans (4-6) were paced by Tevin Calhoun who played 24 minutes as a reserve and contributed 14 points, along with five rebounds in the setback. Kevin Thomas made good on 6-of-7 shots from the floor in order to come up with his 13 points, while Hunter Williams knocked down 3-of-6 shots behind the 3- point line towards 12 points.

The largest lead of the night for the Leathernecks was a four-point edge five minutes into the meeting, but the squad shot a disappointing 8-of-25 from the field, including 1-of-8 behind the 3-point line in the first half, en route to a 35-26 deficit at the break.

Shooting 52.6 percent from the floor over the final 20 minutes, the Trojans should have had the decision wrapped up, but they made a dismal 1-of-9 at the free-throw line in the second half, compared to 11-of-13 for Western Illinois which used the charity stripe to steal away the win down the stretch.

In addition to shooting a miserable 11-of-25 at the free-throw line, Troy also turned the ball over 15 times on the night.

Both teams will be back in action on Saturday as the Leathernecks battle UC Santa Barbara and Troy goes up against host Utah State in the final round of this event.
