GAME NOTES: The ULM Warhawks finally play in front of their home crowd, as they entertain the Samford Bulldogs in non-conference action at Fant-Ewing Coliseum on Monday night.

The Warhawks actually tipped off the 2013-14 campaign 10 days ago at Kansas and were dropped by the top-10 program in an 80-63 final. ULM has onlt two home dates on the calendar until just a few days before Christmas, as the squad hosts Thomas on Dec. 9.

As for the Bulldogs, they began the campaign with a 79-62 pounding of Martin Methodist, but the squad has lost two straight since. Samford came up short against UT Arlington on the road last week, 88-75, and was then bounced by 23rd-ranked Indiana in an ugly 105-59 final on Friday in Bloomington.

In terms of the all-time series between these two teams, the Warhawks are ahead by a 7-5 margin.

Samford allowed 54 points in the first half alone on Friday at Indiana, just five fewer than the Bulldogs scored themselves the entire game. At the conclusion of the meeting the Hoosiers had themselves a huge offensive outing, while the Bulldogs limped away with only 29.9 percent shooting from the floor and almost as many turnovers (16) as baskets (20). Tyler Hood scored 15 points for the visitors, followed by Raijon Kelly, Tim Williams and Isaiah Williams with 10 points apiece.

Kelly leads the team in scoring through three games with 14.0 ppg, but his 38.9 percent shooting from the floor is somewhat questionable. The same goes for Tim Williams who, while netting 12.7 ppg, is converting a mere 38.7 percent from the field. However, the big difference between the two is that the latter is the most active player in the paint for the Bulldogs with his 12.3 rpg.

Considering the Warhawks were heading into a hostile environment against one of the top-ranked teams in the country, the squad really didn't do that bad against Kansas. Marvin Williams tried to keep the visitors in the mix with his 19 points and six rebounds, but he fouled out after playing just 24 minutes. Amos Olatayo tacked on 11 points and Nick Coppola 10 for a team that shot a respectable 42.9 percent from the field, but at the same time allowed the Jayhawks to knock down 53.5 percent.

ULM is coming off an atrocious 2012-13 campaign during which it registered a grand total of four wins, only one of those coming after Jan. 6. The Warhawks closed out last season on a six-game slide, which means they have now dropped seven straight. Olatayo led the team in scoring with 15.8 ppg a year ago, but he shot only 58.8 percent at the free-throw line and 28.2 percent beyond the arc.

The Warhawks have a long way to go in order to rebound from last season's horrific record, but a step in the right direction should come tonight as the squad hosts a Samford team that is ripe for the picking.

Sports Network Predicted Outcome: ULM 68, Samford 63
