GAME NOTES: The Western Michigan Broncos have won three consecutive games, but have a challenge waiting ahead as the Mid-American Conference East Division- leading Akron Zips come to town for a conference showdown.

Akron, at 8-2 in the MAC East Division, has won two consecutive games and five of its last six altogether. The Zips got a scare from Bowling Green in their last outing, escaping with a 65-63 victory.

Western Michigan has won three in a row and five of its last six in conference play, including a 74-71 win over Northern Illinois Sunday. The Broncos are 7-3 in the MAC this season, and are a game behind West Division leader Toledo.

Akron holds a six-game lead in the all-time series with Western Michigan, 23-17. This is the first and only time these teams will meet on the court during the regular season.

Akron jumped out in front of Bowling Green in the Zips' most recent contest, and led at the half, 35-26. But the Falcons came running back in the second half, outscoring Akron by seven points and putting a scare into the Zips, who won by two points. Quincy Diggs led all Akron scorers with 14 points in the contest, and Demetrius Treadwell notched a double-double with 12 points and 10 rebounds. Nick Harney also added 11 in the win. The Zips shot 47.3 percent from the floor in the game.

Treadwell and Diggs have remained consistent go-to players for the Zips this season. The two are the only players on the Akron roster averaging double- digit point totals. Treadwell leads the squad with a 14 ppg average, and Diggs checks in at 12.4 ppg. The two players are also one-two in team rebounding, with Treadwell leading at 8.7 rpg and Diggs at 4.4 rpg. Diggs leads the team with 2.8 apg and with a 1.7 spg mark.

Western Michigan's 37-33 lead over Northern Illinois at the end of the first half wasn't a giant lead, but it proved to be useful enough. The Huskies only shed a point off the WMU lead in the second half, and the Broncos escaped with the three-point victory. David Brown led all scorers in the contest for Western Michigan, netting 26 points and grabbing six rebounds. Shayne Whittington netted 15 points with eight boards, and Connar Tava had 12 points.

The end result in terms of individual points for Western Michigan sums up the season perfectly. Brown has the team lead in scoring this season for the Broncos with 18.8 ppg, while Whittington checks in at second with 14.8 ppg and Tava at 12.1 ppg. Whittington tops the team in rebounding at 8.6 rpg, and leads the squad with 23 blocked shots on the year. Tava, who is second in rebounding with 5.7 rpg, leads the team in assists with a 2.8 apg average.

Akron has a positive record on the road this season, but both of these squads are very strong on their home courts. The Broncos will have a tough time containing Treadwell and Diggs, but the same is true for Akron and containing Brown and Whittington.
