GAME NOTES: The Stanford Cardinal will try to build off an impressive win, as they host the Washington State Cougars in a Pac-12 Conference tilt at Maples Pavilion on Wednesday night.

The Cardinal matched up with the then nationally-ranked Oregon Ducks over the weekend, and escaped with an 82-80 victory on the road. The win ended a two- game skid for Stanford, and was its first in league play this season. The Cardinal are 10-5 overall, including a 6-2 mark at home, where they will be again this Saturday against Washington.

Although Washington State's victory over Utah on Sunday was not against a ranked team. it was still a marked improvement from recent results. The win ended a three-game losing streak for the Cougars, who have pulled themselves to .500 overall (8-8). That mark includes a 1-3 record on the road, which they will have a chance to improve again on Saturday against California.

Stanford won the only meeting last season between these teams with a 78-67 triumph, also at Maples Pavilion. It was the second win in the last three matchups for the Cardinal, who lead the all-time series by a count of 70-59.

Washington State made up for its own offensive deficiencies (.375 FG percentage) against Utah by playing well at the defensive end. The Cougars held the Utes to just 29.5 percent shooting overall, including a 4-of-20 effort over the final 20 minutes.

It was just another strong defensive performance for the Cougars, who are holding foes to just 63 ppg and 42.2 percent shooting. Unfortunately, that has not led to more wins because they are the worst offensive team in the Pac-12, ranking last in scoring (63.9 ppg), assists (11.3 apg) and field goal percentage (.423). The offensive production has been hurt even more by the loss of leading score DaVonte Lacy (17.7 ppg), who is the only double-digit scorer on the roster, but is out with torn cartilage in his ribs. Without Lacy, Royce Woolridge (9.3 ppg) and Que Johnson (9.4 ppg) are the best options.

Stanford never trailed after halftime against Oregon thanks to some strong shooting from both beyond the arc and at the free-throw line. The Cardinal nailed 7-of-12 3-point tries in the period and 8-of-12 from the charity stripe, while hitting 54.5 percent and 76.9 percent, respectively, from each distance in the game overall.

Chasson Randle (19.5 ppg) continued his impressive campaign in the win, scoring 23 points on 8-of-14 from the field. Randle is third in the Pac-12 in scoring, and has tallied at least 20 points in three of the last four games. Anthony Brown (13.7 ppg, 5.5 rpg) was also in a zone against Oregon as he tied for the game-high with 24 points on 10-of-12 shooting. Dwight Powell (14.3 ppg, 7.5 rpg) finished with 14 points in the victory, but frontcourt battery mate Josh Huestis (10.5 ppg, 8.1 rpg, 2.1 bpg) was limited to just a single point on 0-of-7 from the floor. However, Huestis' most critical contributions are on the boards and in blocks, a category in which he ranks third in the league.

With how hot Randle has been of late and during the season in general, the Cougars will be hard-pressed to keep the Cardinal close enough to get a shot at the upset.
