St. Louis sneaks past Duquesne

Pittsburgh, PA (SportsNetwork.com) - Austin McBroom buried a go-ahead 3- pointer with just under a minute remaining, as No. 19 Saint Louis remained unbeaten in conference play with a 76-72 victory over Duquesne on Wednesday at Palumbo Center.

Jeremiah Jones drained two free throws with 57 seconds left to break a 70-all tie and give Duquesne a two-point lead, but McBroom responded with a triple at the other end to put Saint Louis on top.

After Duquesne sandwiched a pair of empty possessions around a missed free throw from Rob Loe, Mike McCall, Jr. knocked down two free throws to push the spread to three with 13 seconds left.

Micah Mason then missed a triple on Duquesne's next touch, and Jake Barnett split a pair at the stripe to seal the outcome.

"This season, we've been in circumstances where we had to fight," McBroom said. "We had to keep fighting and eventually it was going to fall into our hands."

McCall contributed 13 points, Grandy Glaze added 12 with eight rebounds and McBroom registered 11 points for the Billikens (18-2, 5-0 A-10), who have won 12 straight games since a 70-65 setback against Wichita State on Dec. 1.

The 12-game win streak is the longest by the Billikens since the 1993-94 season.

Ovie Soko led all scorers with 18 points, while Dominique McKoy and Mason each netted 15 points for the Dukes (8-9, 1-4), who have lost four straight since opening conference play with a win over Fordham.

"Our guys executed great, all the way down to the end," Duquesne coach Jim Ferry said. "We had a couple of missed layups at the end of the game, but we got the executed shot we were trying to get."

Glaze's layup got Saint Louis within 29-28 with 6:39 left in the first half, but McKoy countered with back-to-back jumpers before Mason knocked down a triple to give Duquesne an eight-point edge.

However, Saint Louis scored the final six points of the first half and got a triple from Loe to open the second, giving the Billikens a 37-36 edge less than 10 seconds into the final frame.

Duquesne quickly regained control with an 11-2 spurt, but the Billikens battled back with nine of the game's next 11 points to pull within 49-48 with 12:39 left in the game.

It remained a one-possession game from there until Soko followed four straight points from Jerry Jones with 1-of-2 from the stripe to make it 62-58 in favor of Duquesne with 7:14 to play.

Saint Louis stormed back with a 10-2 spurt that McCall capped with a trey for a 68-64 lead, but the Dukes answered with an 8-2 swing, culminating in two free throws from Jones that made it 72-70 Duquesne with under a minute left.
