GAME NOTES: The Vermont Catamount clash with the Sonoma State Seawolves on Saturday on the final day of the Golden Gate Challenge.

Sonoma State, which operates out of the California Collegiate Athletic Association at the Division II level, has opened the season just 1-3, which includes two losses in this event to San Francisco on Wednesday (96-73) and Illinois State on Friday (75-58).

Vermont came into this tourney with a four-game losing streak before claiming an 87-76 win over Illinois State in Wednesday's opening round. The Catamounts fell back to their losing ways on Friday night, however, as they dropped a 72-61 decision to host San Francisco to fall to 2-6 on the season.

This game marks the first-ever meeting between these two squads in men's basketball.

The Seawolves kept their contest with Illinois State interesting for most of the night, as they trailed by just one with under 15 minutes to play, but from there they lost control an eventually lost by 17 points. They shot a low 35.3 percent from the field, which included an ice-cold 3-of-12 showing from 3- point range. Overcoming the struggles of most of his teammates was Justin Herold, who netted 21 points on 9-of-13 from the field. Brandon Glanz was also solid with 10 points and eight rebounds, although he was just 3-of-11 shooting. Sonoma State hasn't been a great scoring team in the early going, as it pours in shy of 68 points per game on 44.5 percent shooting, and it has disappointed at the foul line as well (.638). Herold (15.7 ppg) carries his team by shooting a blistering 71.4 percent from the field. Glanz (14.0 ppg, 7.3 rpg) is a consistent source of production in the paint, while Sterling Arterberry (12.0 ppg) rounds out the unit's double-digit scorers.

The Catamounts had a modest shooting night on Friday, making 43.8 percent of their field goal tries, but they could not keep pace with a red-hot San Francisco squad (.510). They also failed to cash in at the foul line (13- of-24) and they committed 15 turnovers. Clancy Rugg tallied 13 points and six rebounds in the losing effort, while Brian Voelkel and Sandro Carissimo netted 11 points apiece. Voelkel also handed out six assists and logged three steals. On the season, Vermont has been rather successful from the field at greater than 45 percent, but that has only resulted in 69.1 points per game, 6.4 points fewer than it allows on average. It also sports negative rebounding (-2.5) and turnover (-0.7) margins. Rugg is off to a strong first month of the season with 16.4 points per game (.549 FG percentage) and 6.8 rebounds per contest. Carissimo (13.0 ppg) is the only other Catamount to average in double figures.

Neither team has been a model of consistency, but expect the Catamounts' superior playmakers out on the perimeter to make the difference.
