NCAA Game Summary - UC Davis at San Jose State

(Wednesday, December 18)

Final Score: San Jose State 89, UC Davis 85 (3OT)

San Jose, CA (SportsNetwork.com) - Rashad Muhammad scored a career-high 28 points, as the San Jose State Spartans outlasted the UC Davis Aggies in triple overtime, 89-85, in a non-conference slugfest at the Event Center.

Muhammad shot 6-of-13 from 3-point range for SJSU (4-6), while Devante Wilson was also outstanding with 22 points. Chris Cunningham added 13 points and eight rebounds, while Isaac Thornton had 12 points and six assists.

For UCD (3-9), Corey Hawkins netted 18 points, while Darius Graham finished with 16 points on 12-of-14 from the foul line. Iggy Nujic scored 13 points, Georgi Funtarov put up 12 points, and Ryan Sypkens and Brynton Lemar registered 11 points apiece.

While UC Davis shot a modest 45.8 percent from the field in the first half, it was able to roll to a comfortable 37-23 lead at intermission by holding SJSU to only 26.9 percent shooting.

The Aggies appeared to have the game well in hand up by 19 with under 15 minutes to play, but the Spartans gradually chipped away at the lead until Thornton tied the game at 60 with 2:30 left on a 3-pointer. SJSU held a three- point lead with 31 seconds left after Jaleel Williams converted a layup, but UC Davis answered on its next possession with a Lemar 3-pointer. Muhammad missed a shot at the buzzer and the game went to overtime.

In the first extra session, SJSU grabbed a 74-73 lead with 22 seconds left on a Dylan Alexander layup. Hawkins drew a foul with 12 seconds remaining, but he made just 1-of-2 at the foul line to tie the game up, and after the Spartans missed the potential game-winner, another overtime period was queued up.

UC Davis had a chance to win the game in the second overtime when Graham stepped to the foul line down by one with three seconds left, but he had a 1-of-2 trip to knot the score at 80 heading into a third extra session.

SJSU finally sealed the deal in triple overtime thanks in large part to Wilson's 6-of-8 showing at the free-throw line in the period.

The Spartans' bench put up 52 points, while the Aggies' reserves only scored 15 points. SJSU hung on to win despite losing the turnover battle, 22-12.
