No. 20 Wisconsin holds off upset-minded Green Bay

Green Bay, WI (SportsNetwork.com) - Frank Kaminsky collected 16 points and eight rebounds, as No. 20 Wisconsin slipped past Green Bay, 69-66, on Saturday at Resch Center.

Kaminsky's layup with 3:05 left gave Wisconsin a 64-60 edge, but the Badgers failed to register a field goal the rest of the way, allowing Green Bay to get within one after Keifer Sykes knocked down consecutive jumpers.

Sykes, who finished with a game-high 32 points, missed a potential go-ahead jumper on Green Bay's next touch before Josh Gasser buried a pair of free throws to make it 67-64 with 26 seconds left.

Carrington Love's layup at the other end again brought the Phoenix within one before Traevon Jackson split two free throws to leave the margin at two.

Sykes missed a layup on Green Bay's next possession and after Kaminsky went 1- of-2 from the charity stripe, Sykes misfired on a three-point try to seal the outcome.

"I just didn't want to let my teammates down," Kaminsky said of leading the team down the stretch. "I came back off the bench with energy and just tried to do whatever I could to get a win."

Sam Dekker donated 13 points and seven rebounds while Gasser finished with 11 points and six boards for the Badgers (3-0), who were coming off a 59-53 victory over No. 11 Florida.

Greg Mays registered nine points and six boards for the Phoenix (1-1), who opened their season with a 71-49 win over Northern Michigan.

"It's a great learning lesson," Green Bay head coach Brian Wardle said of losing to a team like Wisconsin. "We're going to build from it and we'll definitely grow from it from here on out."

A tightly-contested first half found Green Bay clinging to a 25-23 lead with 7:46 left in the frame before the Badgers reeled off nine straight points, capped by Kaminsky's jumper that made it 32-25 with 2:40 left.

Green Bay got within five by the end of the half before opening the second stanza on a 10-1 surge that Sykes capped with a layup to give the Phoenix a 39-35 edge just over three minutes into the second.

Mays' three-point play a bit later moved the margin to 50-43, but Kaminsky countered with a triple to spark a 17-4 Wisconsin swing that Jackson finished with a layup to put the Badgers in front, 60-54, with 6:04 remaining.
