GAME NOTES: Moving back home to Lakefront Arena for the final game of the Hoops for Hope Classic, the New Orleans Privateers square off with the Alcorn State Braves this afternoon.

Alcorn State was dismantled by Tulane in the first round of this event on Friday, 83-41, but the Braves performed much better in Saturday's second-round clash with San Diego, falling by just a single point, 66-65. The loss to the Toreros was the fourth straight for Alcorn State.

New Orleans, now a Division II programs, took it on the chin in Saturday's bout with local rival Tulane, falling to the Green Wave in a 72-53 final. As a result, the Privateers dropped to 3-4 on the year, with its wins coming over little known schools Selma, Southeastern Florida and Tennessee Temple.

This game marks just the second all-time meeting between Alcorn State and New Orleans on the hardwood, with the Privateers claiming a 103-74 victory on December 19, 2007 in Biloxi as part of the Mississippi Gulf Coast Classic in the first encounter.

Chris Brand scored 16 points, leading four Braves in double figures against San Diego, but a win eluded the team for the fourth straight time as it fell by one point. Ian Francis and JaMichael Hawkins hit for 12 points apiece, and Twann Oakley chipped in 11 for Alcorn State, which made good on 47.2 percent of field goal attempts, which included a 7-of-16 showing from three-point range. The Braves were able to stay close thanks to a 57.7 percent shooting effort in the second half, and they actually had a one-point lead with less than a minute to play.

Antonio Wertz scored a game-high 26 points and grabbed nine rebounds as well, but his effort went for naught as the Privateers were throttled by Tulane in a 72-53 final on Saturday. Lovell Cook added 17 points for New Orleans, which made good on 40.4 percent of its total shots, but only 27.3 percent of its three-point attempts. Tulane scored 44 points in the paint, and the Green Wave's reserves outscored UNO's by a 22-3 margin.

Despite it being a D-I vs. D-II matchup, these two teams are fairly even in terms of talent. That said, the advantage goes to New Orleans as it gets to play this one in front of the hometown faithful.
