Memphis rolls to win over Siena

Orlando, FL (SportsNetwork.com) - Shaq Goodwin tallied 17 points, 10 rebounds and three blocks to lead No. 21 Memphis past Siena, 87-60, in the opening round of the Old Spice Classic.

Goodwin made his first eight shots from the floor and finished 8-of-10 shooting for Memphis (3-1), which will meet LSU in the semifinals on Friday.

"Very happy for the win," Memphis head coach Josh Pastner said. "We don't take wins for granted. I thought we played hard."

Joe Jackson netted a game-high 18 points, while Michael Dixon, Jr. went 4- for-4 from 3-point range en route to 16 points off the bench. Austin Nichols added 12 points and nine boards.

Brett Bisping and Evan Hymes went for 11 and 10 points, respectively, off the bench for Siena (2-5), which did not have a starter in double figures. Bisping also added a personal-best 12 rebounds.

"I expected us to compete a little harder than that," Siena coach Jimmy Patsos said. "We could have competed better for 40 minutes."

Memphis went scoreless over the first 2 1/2 minutes of the game before Goodwin's alley-oop dunk ignited the Memphis offense. Goodwin scored eight of the first 10 Tigers' points and energized the crowd with an emphatic block on what would have been a point-blank layup by Bisping.

Ryan Oliver's trey made it 18-15 at the 9:15 mark, but it was all Memphis from that point on. Nichols had a layup to start an 11-0 charge, and his consecutive blocks on Marquis Wright and Hymes led to a Geron Johnson breakaway dunk on the tail end.

The Tigers made their final six shots of the first half. Jackson had four of the buckets, including a triple in the closing seconds that put Memphis in front 48-31 at the break.

Lavon Long capped a 10-4 Siena run to start the second half, but Memphis got back on track when Kuran Iverson tipped in a Jackson missed 3-pointer out of a timeout. Memphis scored five in a row after that on a Nichols dunk and Jackson three-point play to regain control.

Game Notes

Memphis freshman Nick King scored seven points, failing to reach double digits for the first time in his career ... Siena has not taken down a Top-25 opponent since March 21, 2008, when it beat Vanderbilt in the NCAA Tournament ... The Saints had 20 turnovers while Memphis turned the ball over just 10 times... Memphis shot 52.4 percent from the floor.
