NCAA Game Summary - Canisius at Siena

(Sunday, February 16th)

Final Score: Canisius 92, Siena 88 (3OT)

Albany, NY (SportsNetwork.com) - Billy Baron exploded for 40 points and 10 rebounds as he helped lead the Canisius Golden Griffins to a 92-88 triple- overtime victory against the Siena Saints in a Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference contest at the Times Union Center.

Baron, who also handed out five assists and made a couple of steals, shot an impressive 18-of-19 at the free-throw line, but was only 2-of-12 behind the 3- point line for the Golden Griffins (18-9, 12-4 MAAC) as they posted their second straight win. Chris Perez accounted for 25 points and Jordan Heath 11 before fouling out for the visitors.

The Saints (11-16, 7-9) were led by Rob Poole who produced 33 points, shooting 11-of-18 from the floor, including 6-of-11 behind the 3-point line. Brett Bisping and Ryan Oliver chipped in 16 and 12 points, respectively, the former pulling down a team-best nine rebounds, while Marquis Wright logged a double- double with 10 points and 11 assists.

Canisius made a total of just eight field goals in the first half, shooting a woeful 1-of-10 behind the 3-point line in the frame, yet the visitors trailed by just five at the break, 32-27.

In the second half the Griffs improved to 60.0 percent from the floor, but it was free-throw shooting down the stretch that sent the meeting to overtime knotted at 68-68.

During the first extra session Perez connected on a couple at the charity stripe with 1:38 remaining to again lock up the score at 73-73, but from there both sides failed to break through, requiring a second overtime period.

A 3-pointer by Perez with 1:36 to play gave the visitors a 78-77 edge and a Heath layup in the final minute moved the advantage to three points, but 20 seconds later Poole knocked down a 3-pointer to make the score 80-80. Perez had a chance to win the game in the waning moments but missed converting a long-range attempt.

Trailing by a point, 88-87, with less than a minute on the clock in the third and final overtime, Baron took over with a layup and three successful free throws to give the win to Canisius.

The Golden Griffins shot only 5-of-25 from three-point range on the day, but outscored Siena at the free-throw line, 33-21, and forced the host into 21 turnovers.
