GAME NOTES: Fresh of their thrilling upset of top-ranked Arizona, the California Golden Bears match up with the Stanford Cardinal in a Pac-12 Conference clash at Haas Pavilion.

Justin Cobbs hit a fall-away jumper from the corner in the closing seconds to lift California over Arizona, knocking them from the ranks of the undefeated and from its perch as the No. 1 team in the country. The win ended a three- game losing streak for the Golden Bears, who are 15-7 overall and 6-3 in league action. They will visit Washington State in their next outing.

Stanford came off of its own failed upset bid of the Wildcats to post a 76-70 win over Arizona State on Saturday. The Cardinal have won two of their last three games, improving to 14-7 overall and 5-4 against conference foes along the way. They will travel to Seattle to take on Washington next.

These teams both kicked off their respective conference schedules when they met earlier this season. California came out on top in that encounter, earning a 69-62 win. Stanford had won two straight prior to that decision, but California leads the all-time series, 146-117.

Dwight Powell poured in 28 points and Chasson Randle tacked on 21 as the Cardinal won in a shootout over Arizona State. Stanford only made 39.3 percent of its shots from the floor, but it had more than twice as many offensive rebounds as the Sun Devils (15-7), leading to a 15-4 edge in second chance points.

The biggest positive of the Sun Devils game, outside of the win, was the return to form of Randle (18.8 ppg), who is fourth in the Pac-12 in scoring, but had been limited to 12 points on 3-of-15 shooting against Arizona. Powell (14.9 ppg, 7.6 rpg) had only 13 points against Arizona, but he played in only 23 minutes due to foul trouble. He was on the court for 33 minutes against Arizona State, with the added time allowing him to tie a season-high in scoring. Anthony Brown (12.4 ppg) and Josh Huestis (11.2 ppg, 8.3 rpg) are also important contributors.

Cobbs finished with 19 points and seven assists while David Kravish added a double-double (14 points, 11 rebounds) for California against Arizona. The Golden Bears limited the Wildcats to just 32.3 percent shooting in the contest, while turning in a 44.6 percent effort themselves.

The Golden Bears are also a team that features four double figure scorers, spread evenly between the front and backcourts. Cobbs (!5.7 ppg, 6 apg) is by far the best scorer on the squad, as well as the team and conference leader in assists. Tyrone Wallace (11.5 ppg, 3.1 apg) is a strong complimentary guard, adding scoring and passing as a second option to Cobbs. Kravish (11.7 ppg, 7.7 rpg) and Richard Solomon (11.6 ppg, 10.6 rpg) eat up space on the inside, finishing well around the rim, cleaning the glass and protecting the rim well as a duo. Solomon also leads the Pac-12 in rebounds.

With Kravish and Solomon on the inside, Powell will have trouble getting good looks, as well as staying out of foul trouble. Meanwhile, Cobbs and Randle will likely be shooting it out in the backcourt, a matchup which favors the Golden Bears.
