GAME NOTES: The Stony Brook Seawolves and the Florida Atlantic Owls are set to clash at Calihan Hall on Saturday afternoon as part of the 2K Sports Classic.

Since opening up the season with three straight victories, Stony Brook has dropped back-to-back contests, including its opening-round matchup with Toledo on Friday night, 103-99. The Seawolves trailed the Rockets for the entire second half and by as many as 11 points, and while they were able to close the gap to one possession on several occasions, Toledo sealed the deal by drilling all six of its free throws in the final 19 seconds. Leading the comeback charge was Anthony Jackson, who scored 26 of his career-high 36 points after intermission, and he finished the night 12-of-16 from the field, including a red-hot 7-of-9 from 3-point range. Jameel Warney netted 17 points in the setback and too was outstanding from the floor (8-of-11). Dave Coley (13 points) and Carson Puriefoy (12 points) rounded out the balanced effort with five assists apiece.

FAU has also been trending in the wrong direction, as it has dropped four straight matchups since claiming an 86-51 win in its opener over Ave Maria. The Owls were thoroughly overmatched by host squad Detroit in the first night of the event, as they shot just 31.8 percent from the field and committed an unsightly 23 turnovers on their way to a 77-44 blowout defeat. Pablo Bertone was the only player to finish in double figures with 10 points, although he was hardly an asset to his team, as he shot just 4-of-15 from the field and committed five turnovers.

This bout marks the first-ever meeting between these two teams.

Stony Brook has been involved in a couple of high-scoring affairs this season, which explains its lofty scoring average (79.6 ppg) as well as its questionable scoring defense (75.8 ppg). Jackson's career-best performance on Friday played a role in his ascent to the team's top scorer (21.6 ppg), and he has been active from 3-point range at (17-of-38). Warney (16.2 ppg, 8.6 rpg) is a mainstay in the frontcourt, and is also a strong defender with six blocks and five steals. Puriefoy (12.0 ppg) has handed out 13 assists but also leads the team in turnovers with 11.

While FAU's 33-point setback in the opening round was its worst performance of the season, it has set a trend of poor play through five games as it scores just 66.0 points per game on 40 percent field goal shooting while allowing foes to net greater than 73 points per contest. The Owls have been plagued by turnovers, committing more than 15 per game, which all but negates a positive rebounding margin (+5.6). Despite Bertone's poor field goal percentage (.380), he is still able to generate enough volume to lead the team in scoring with 15.8 points per game. Justin Raffington (9.0 ppg, 7.6 rpg) and Dragen Sekelja (9.0 ppg, 6.4 rpg) have both been positive assets in the frontcourt.

FAU showed little signs of life against Detroit in the opening round, and unless something changes in less than 24 hours, it will have its hands full against a Stony Brook squad that has no issues lighting up the scoreboard.
