(Saturday, March 8th)

Final Score: South Carolina 74, Mississippi State 62

Starkville, MS (SportsNetwork.com) - Brenton Williams knocked down seven shots from beyond the arc en route to a game-high 27 points as the South Carolina Gamecocks defeated the Mississippi State Bulldogs, 74-62, in a Southeastern Conference tilt at Humphrey Coliseum.

Sindarius Thornwell recorded a double-double for the Gamecocks (12-19, 5-13 SEC) with 22 points and 11 rebounds, while Kacinas Mindaugas posted 13 points and nine boards. South Carolina was without coach Frank Martin, who was serving a one game suspension for harsh language at his players during a loss to Florida.

Craig Sword led MSU (13-18, 3-15) with 19 points and five assists. Fred Thomas provided the Bulldogs a spark off the bench with 15 points on 6-of-10 shooting from the floor.

Despite connecting on 52.9 percent of their field goal attempts in the opening period, the Bulldogs went into the intermission trailing, 36-29. South Carolina recorded 20 more shots from the floor than the Bulldogs and sank 3- of-10 tries from 3-point range in the first half.

The Gamecocks heated up to drain seven of their 10 attempts from beyond the arc after the break. MSU was unable to overcome the halftime deficit as it was limited to just 37.5 percent efficiency from the floor, including a 1-of-6 clip from behind the 3-point line over the final 20 minutes of the contest.

South Carolina dominated the glass to finish with a 46-27 advantage in total rebounds and also outscored the hosts, 30-9, from 3-point range. MSU will play Vanderbilt and South Carolina will square off with Auburn on Wednesday in the opening round of the SEC Tournament
