Summers leads Spartans over Prairie View

East Lansing, MI (Sports Network) - Durrell Summers scored 15 of his 25 points from beyond the arc and No. 14 Michigan State had no trouble in a 90-51 victory over Prairie View A&M despite playing without head coach Tom Izzo.

Draymond Green added 11 points, while Kalin Lucas and Delvon Roe scored 10 apiece for the Spartans (8-3), who have won three of four.

Trant Simpson scored 17 points and Demondre Chapman had 13 for the Panthers (2-10), who have dropped two straight.

Izzo served his one-game suspension for a secondary violation of NCAA rules stemming from the hiring of a summer camp counselor who was associated with a prospect.

The Michigan State head coach called the violation unintentional and isolated and said he regretted that it happened.

His Spartans were fine without him.

"I think every head coach should get a day off and let his assistants do all the work," said Spartans associate head coach Mark Montgomery. "I knew the guys would rally around [the other coaches]."

With their coach watching from home, the Spartans forced 14 turnovers in the first half for a 42-27 lead at the break and were never threatened by an overmatched Prairie View A&M team in the final 20 minutes of the game.

"It was one of those games that our team is going to learn from," said Panthers head coach Byron Rimm II.

It was a much-needed romp for the Spartans on the heels of their 77-76 squeaker over Oakland last Saturday and a loss to Syracuse four days before that -- their third setback to a national powerhouse this year.

Michigan State, which has also dropped games against Connecticut and Duke, scored the first seven points of the game and never relinquished the lead. The Spartans went ahead by as many as 18 points in the final minutes of the half when Summers drained one of his five three-pointers to make it 39-21.

The Panthers cut their deficit from 15 points to 13 after Cortney Bell hit a jumper for the first bucket of the second half. But the game was never closer than that.

Michigan State made it easy on the Breslin Center faithful by keeping the lead over 30 points for the final 4:15 of the game.

Game Notes

This was the first-ever meeting between the teams...Michigan State shot 50 percent (32-of-64) while holding the Panthers to 33 percent shooting...Summers was 5-for-7 from three-point range and the Spartans were 8-for-17 as a team.
