Hempstead, NY (SportsNetwork.com) - Deon Jones scored 22 points, leading five players in double figures, as the Monmouth Hawks slipped by the Hofstra Pride, 88-84, in the season opener for both programs at Mack Sports Complex.

Jones also accounted for nine rebounds for the Hawks (1-0), matching the effort by Tyrone O'Garro on the glass. Josh James pitched in with 19 points and six assists off the bench, followed by Andrew Nicholas with 13 points, Justin Robinson 11 and Max DiLeo 10 points in a reserve role.

Hofstra (0-1) was paced by Zeke Upshaw with 22 points, although he shot just 2-of-8 behind the 3-point line. Chris Jenkins accounted for 17 points off the bench, followed by Dion Nesmith and Moussa Kone with 10 points apiece, the latter also pulling down 10 rebounds. Stephen Nwaukoni produced a game-high 13 boards for the Pride.

The Pride held Monmouth to only 36.1 percent shooting from the floor in the first half and led by as many as 12 points before settling on a 45-36 edge at the break.

In the second half it was Hofstra that struggled from the field (.355), converting a mere 3-of-15 beyond the arc, allowing the Hawks to storm back and grab the four-point win.

In a game that featured five ties and 13 lead changes, the Pride cost themselves a chance at a victor by shooting only 9-of-31 on the perimeter.
