Norfolk State gives Evans three-year extension

Norfolk, VA (Sports Network) - Norfolk State announced Friday that head basketball coach Anthony Evans agreed to a three-year contract extension through the 2016-17 season.

Evans, whose contract was set to expire after the 2013-14 season, will receive a raise from $125,000 to $175,000 on July 1, 2012.

"I'm extremely grateful for the opportunity that [NSU President] Dr. Atwater and [NSU athletics director Marty] Miller have given me in continuing to lead the men's basketball program," Evans said. "I look forward to building on the program's recent success in the coming years."

Norfolk State set a Division-I era school record with 26 victories last season and won its first MEAC title, making the NCAA Tournament for the first time. Once in the tourney, NSU, a 15-seed, pulled off one of the biggest upsets in modern day NCAA Tournament history by knocking off No. 2 seed Missouri in the West region second round.

"The overall performance of the men's basketball team has improved under the supervision of coach Evans," Miller said. "We are fortunate to have one of the great up-and-coming basketball coaches in America leading our men's basketball program for the next five years."

Evans has a 78-82 record in five seasons at Norfolk State and he has led the Spartans to two MEAC Tournament finals.
