GAME NOTES: The Akron Zips and Ohio University Bobcats each look to extend winning streaks as they clash in a Mid-American Conference battle Sunday at the Convocation Center.

After losing three straight games - including two in a row to South Carolina - Akron has won its last three and will try to make it four, as the Zips travel to Athens for a MAC showdown. Akron won its most recent game, 72-68, over Ball State on Wednesday.

Ohio has won four in a row following a loss to UMass back on Dec. 18. The Bobcats defeated Kent State on Wednesday, 59-53, in the team's MAC opener. Ohio and Toledo are the only two conference teams already sporting double- digit wins.

This contest will be the 70th meeting in history between the Zips and Bobcats. Ohio holds a slim 35-34 advantage in the all-time series, though Akron will look to tie it up on the road.

As back-to-back MAC champions, the Zips have large targets on their back this season. Ball State nearly set the Zips back in their conference opener, but Akron was able to hold on for a win. Quincy Diggs came off the bench for Akron to score a game-high 21 points on 8-of-17 shooting in the contest. He was also a perfect 5-of-5 from the free-throw line. Demetrius "Tree" Treadwell was the only other Zips player to record double digits, netting 13 points to go along with seven rebounds. The Zips shot an even 40 percent in the game.

Treadwell is the go-to guy on Akron in terms of scoring, as the forward averages 12.9 ppg and a healthy 7.6 rpg. Diggs, who has only started three games this season, is second on the roster in scoring at 12.2 ppg and a team- best 2.9 apg. There's a big gap between the top scorers on Akron and everyone else, though the contribution of others on a night-to-night basis is essential. As a team, Akron is averaging 69.5 ppg.

Both Ohio and Kent State played a tough defensive game Wednesday, as the Bobcats came away with the win. Ohio only allowed Kent State to score 19 points in the first half (though poor shooting didn't help Kent State's cause). Nick Kellogg was the only Ohio player in double figures, netting a team-high 19 points on 6-of-14 shooting form the floor. He added six free throws and six rebounds in the win. T.J. Hall scored seven points and brought down nine rebounds.

Kellogg is the team's leading scorer this season at 15 ppg on 49 percent shooting from the field. Teammate Maurice Ndour is a close second, averaging 14.5 ppg on an impressive 51.7 shooting percentage. Ndour also tops the roster with 7.7 rpg and a team-best 29 blocked shots. The Bobcats are averaging 72.3 ppg through their first 14 games played.

Akron may be back-to-back MAC champion, but Ohio has been playing stellar defense lately. Neither team has a wealth of scorers, so it could come down to whichever bench has the better outing.
