GAME NOTES: The St. Francis Brooklyn Terriers will try to build on their early season success as they tangle with the Coastal Carolina Chanticleers in the mainland part of the Maui Invitational Tournament at the HTC Center.

The winner of this game will advance to take on the victor of the matchup between Oakland and Louisiana.

St. Francis Brooklyn began its season with an impressive performance on a two- game road trip to Florida, where it defeated Miami-Florida, 66-62, in overtime and held on to down Florida Atlantic, 59-57. The Terriers then suffered a 78-58 loss at Dayton before coming up just short of an upset of Syracuse and losing to the Orange, 56-50. Although St. Francis is sitting at the .500 mark, it is hard to be critical of its performance thus far considering its high level of competition. The Terriers have averaged only 58.2 points per game on 39.8 percent shooting from the floor. Their opposition is scoring 63.2 ppg, but has hit on only 37.6 percent from the field and only 18.9 percent from beyond the arc.

Coastal Carolina is 1-3 after its 82-72 loss to Minnesota at Williams Arena in its opening game of the tournament. CCU also suffered setbacks to Akron and Ole Miss with a win over Division III foe Guilford College in between. Despite the losing record, the Chanticleers have performed at a decent level as they have not lost to any opponent by more than 10 points and fell to Ole Miss by only two. They are shooting 41 percent from the floor and outrebounding their opposition by an average of 2.8 boards per tilt.

This will be just the second meeting in history between these schools. Coastal Carolina won the only previous encounter.

Jalen Cannon led the way for St. Francis at the Carrier Dome with 16 points and eight rebounds while Wayne Martin chipped in 13 points off the bench. The Terriers held the Orange to 35,3 percent shooting from the field including DaJuan Coleman's 5-of-5 showing from the floor. Cannon has been excellent through four games as he is carrying averages of 14.8 points and 8.8 rebounds to lead the team in both categories. Martin is second in both with 12.8 ppg and 5.8 rpg. Ben Mockford is netting 10 ppg, but St. Francis does not have another significant contributor on the offensive end. Kevin Douglas is expected to make an impact, but he has hit on only 1-of-8 attempts from 3- point range.

Elijah Wilson has paced CCU in the scoring column in three of its four games to arrive a team-high average of 17.5 ppg. Wilson is a threat from beyond the arc as nine of his 22 made field goals have from behind the 3-point line. Warren Gillis is second on the squad with 10 ppg and five Chanticleers are chipping in 6.5 ppg or more. CCU had trouble maintaining possession versus the Golden Gophers, who turned the Chanticleers' 20 turnovers into 28 points. Despite facing a Big Ten opponent, CCU equaled Minnesota in the rebounding battle with both sides tallying 33 boards each.

Both of these schools have been fearless through their first four games. St. Francis Brooklyn has yet to play at home and has shown the ability to persevere in the harshest of conditions. Very few mid-major programs would be able to come that close to knocking off Syracuse in upstate New York. CCU has been playing well also, but it is not quite at the same level as the visitors.
