GAMES NOTES: To kick off a three-game road trip the Cleveland State Vikings will pay a visit to the Texas-Arlington Mavericks for a non-league clash at the College Park Center Friday night.

The first of the three-game road test for Cleveland State didn't end well for the Vikings as they fell to San Francisco, 91-82. Cleveland State led 38-35 at the half and led by as many as nine points during the game but it just couldn't hold on. In the second half the Vikings shot at a 54.2 percent rate but they also turned the ball over 10 times and let the Dons net 59.4 percent from the field including a 5-of-7 showing from beyond the arc. Cleveland State won its season opener, inching by Iona, 73-69, and is now an even 1-1 on the early season. The Vikings finish the three-game road swing on Monday against Eastern Michigan.

Texas-Arlington has played in three contests thus far and have won back-to- back games entering Friday's matchup. The most recent victory was a 11-64 blowout of Howard Payne, a Division III rival, also at the College Park Center. The Mavericks, who were a mediocre 7-8 at home last year, earned their other win of this season on their home floor with an 88-75 triumph against Samford. The recent winning ways are a nice change of pace from the season opener which ended in a 116-87 loss on the road to Boise State. The Mavericks are on the road in the next four games beginning with a massive challenge against No. 1 Kentucky.

Cleveland State and Texas-Arlington have yet to match up before this season.

Through two games Bryn Forbes has been the most effective offensive threat for the Vikings. Forbes netted 12 points against San Francisco after having posting 22 in the season opener. Forbes is most comfortable taking shots from beyond the arc as he is 6-of-9 on the season from 3-point range. Jon Harris (12.0 ppg, 6.0 rpg) is a solid frontcourt contributor. Harris, who has served a reserve in the first two games, had a season-high 14 points in the loss to San Francisco. Charlie Lee bounced back from a sub par performance in the opener to tie for a team-high 15 points in the second tilt of the year. Lee did make just 4-of-10 shots but helped facilitate the offense but handing out five assists while collecting a trio of steals. Trey Lewis (12.0 ppg) is also averaging in double figures, though the season has yet to really get underway.

The steady 3-point shooting of Reger Dowell has carried the Mavericks. Dowell is averaging an astounding 26.3 points per game in three contests, while netting 12 3-pointers and shooting 42.9 percent from beyond the arc. Dowell really went off when the Mavericks last hit the floor as he finished with 35 points, while hitting 6-of-11 shots from outside the 3-point line. Brandon Edwards (16.3 ppg, 11.0 rpg) has been a sturdy force on the inside, averaging a double-double over the first three games. Edwards didn't manage one against Howard Payne but head coach Scott Cross would settle for a repeat of his 18- point, eight-rebound effort any night. Vincent Dillard (14.0 ppg, 5.0 rpg) teams with Edwards in the frontcourt though both are undersized forwards, with Edwards the tallest at 6-foot-6. Dillard managed a double-double last time out with 12 points and 10 rebounds, while Brandon Williams (15 points, 10 rebounds) matched the feat off the bench.

There is the real potential for this to turn into a 3-point shooting contest between Forbes and Dowell. Right now Dowell has the hotter hand and Dillard and Edwards should be able to handle Hanson in the paint.
