GAME NOTES: The Metro State Roadrunners continue their run at the record books, as they finish up play in the NIT Season Tip-Off on Tuesday against the Canisius Golden Griffins.

With a stunning upset of host Elon on Monday night (75-74), Metro State became the first Division II school to post two wins in the NIT Tip-Off, with the other coming in earlier round action against Fairleigh Dickinson. Still, Metro State's run in this event have been counted as exhibition contests, so according to its official record it still stands at 2-0.

The Golden Griffins moved over .500 on the year with a 79-71 victory over Georgia State in Monday's NIT action. The victory was the second straight for Canisius, which also got by Elon last week in a close affair (85-84).

Mitch McCarron poured in 29 points and grabbed nine rebounds on Monday, as the Roadrunners held off the Elon Phoenix, 75-74, in consolation round action of the NIT Season Tip-Off at Alumni Gym. The team used a 21-10 run to go up by as many as 16 points in the first half and then held on for the two-point decision. Brandon Jefferson and Raul Delgado each finished with 11 points while Nicholas Kay chipped in with 10 for Metro State.

In its two official games, Metro State is scoring a modest 69.0 points per game, but it has shown strong defensive skills, allowing just 47.0 points per contest. Jefferson and Nicholas Kay lead the team with 19.0 points per game each, while Jamal McClerkin (10.0 ppg) and McCarron (7.5 ppg, 9.0 rpg) provide depth.

Billy Baron led the way once again for Canisius, as he poured in a game-high 26 points in the win over Georgia State. Baron was 8-of-14 from the floor and knocked down five 3-pointers in the game. Fellow guard Chris Perez was also a big factor in the victory, as he poured in 22 points on 9-of-14 shooting. Jordan Heath rounded out the top scorers for Canisius with 13 points. The Golden Griffins shot an impressive 50 percent from the floor overall and a better 56.5 percent from behind the arc (13-of-23).

The Golden Griffins aren't an explosive offensive squad by any means, averaging a modest 70.2 ppg. However, Baron is an explosive individual scorer and leads the team with a hefty 22.8 ppg. Perez is a distant second in the scoring column at 13.2 ppg.

The Golden Griffins won't scare many teams with their play at either end of the floor, but Baron and company should do enough to end Metro State's successful run.
