GAME NOTES: The UMBC Retrievers and Rider Broncs take a break from their conference slates today, as they do battle at Alumni Gym in a BracketBuster event. The Retrievers enter the contest on a losing note, as they dropped a 77-65 decision to Vermont on Tuesday. The loss put an end to a three-game winning streak and dropped the club to 12-14 overall. UMBC now heads back out to the road, where it has gone just 4-9 on the season. As for Rider, it was in action just this past Wednesday, when it won a thriller, 90-87, over Niagara. The triumph stopped a two-game slide and pushed the Broncs to 15-11 overall and 9-4 on their home floor. Rider leads the all-time series with UMBC, but this is the first meeting between the programs since the 1996-97 season.

The Retrievers struggled on defense in their last outing, allowing Vermont to shoot 56.4 percent from the floor, including 8-of-14 from long range, in a 77-65 setback. UMBC, which actually led 37-30 at the half, made just 40.3 percent of its attempts from the field and that simply wasn't good enough. Darryl Proctor guided the team in the loss with a double-double of 24 points and 10 rebounds, while Chauncey Gilliam notched one of his own with 16 points and 10 boards. On the season, Proctor has been outstanding for UMBC, averaging a healthy 20.2 ppg and 8.4 rpg to lead the team in both departments. Jay Greene is a distant second with 12.9 ppg and he has been in charge of setting up Proctor and company, dishing out a team-high 6.4 apg. Gilliam chips in with 10.6 ppg for the Retrievers, who are turning in 66.3 ppg this season.

Harris Mansell drilled a three-pointer with 6.0 seconds remaining, lifting Rider over Niagara in a shootout on Wednesday. Mansell finished the game 5- of-8 from long range on his way to 22 points, while Ryan Thompson added 21 points and four assists. The Broncs shot an efficient 54.8 percent from the floor and went an impressive 13-of-21 from beyond the arc. On the season, Rider is hitting on 44.6 percent of its attempts from the field and 36.9 percent from three-point land for an average of 71.6 ppg. Thompson leads the squad with 17.5 ppg and 47 steals and he is also grabbing 6.2 rpg and dishing out 3.3 apg. Mansell checks in with 12.0 ppg and 4.2 rpg, while Mike Ringgold adds 11.5 ppg and a team-high 6.3 rpg. Novar Gadson contributes 10.5 ppg and 5.5 rpg, and Justin Robinson rounds out the double-figure scorers with 10.0 ppg.

Rider has the advantage of hosting this game and its variety of scoring options should lead it past the Retrievers today.
