NCAA Game Summary - Northwestern at Minnesota

(Saturday, February 1st)

Final Score: Northwestern 55, Minnesota 54

Minneapolis, MN (SportsNetwork.com) - A 3-pointer by Tre Demps with under a minute remaining proved to be the difference as the Northwestern Wildcats held on for the 55-54 win against the Minnesota Golden Gophers in Big Ten Conference play at Williams Arena.

Demps finished with 11 points off the bench for the Wildcats (12-11, 5-5 Big Ten) as they won for the fourth time in the last five outings. Drew Crawford led the offense with 17 points and JerShon Cobb chipped in 15, including key free throws down the stretch for the visitors.

Minnesota (15-7, 4-5), which has lost two straight and three of the last four, was led by Maurice Walker with 14 points in a reserve role, followed by Austin Hollins with 13.

Less than nine minutes into the meeting the Wildcats found themselves with a double-digit lead, but even as they converted 6-of-13 shots behind the 3-point line and held the hosts to a mere 1-of-9 on the perimeter, Northwestern's lead at the break was only three points, 32-29.

In the second half the visitors made a total of just nine field goals, including 2-of-8 beyond the arc, but thanks to Cobb and Demps the Wildcats were still able to come out on top.

Minnesota, which had a couple of opportunities to win the game in the waning moments, shot only 5-of-9 at the charity stripe on the day.
