NCAA Game Summary - Minnesota at Purdue

(Wednesday, February 5th)

Final Score: Purdue 77, Minnesota 74 (3OT)

West Lafayette, IN (SportsNetwork.com) - A.J. Hammons registered a double- double with 20 points and 14 rebounds as the Purdue Boilermakers narrowly won in triple overtime against the Minnesota Golden Gophers, 77-74, in a Big Ten matchup at Mackey Arena.

Kendall Stephens added 14 points for the Boilermakers (14-9, 4-6 Big Ten), who snapped a four-game losing skid. Ronnie Johnson and Sterling Carter both scored in double figures with 11 and 10 points, respectively, the former also tallying eight assists and eight boards.

Maurice Walker scored 17 points for the Golden Gophers (15-8, 4-6), who had their losing streak stretched to three games. DeAndre Mathieu chipped in 15 points, while Joey King and Austin Hollins had 14 points apiece, with King clearing nine boards before fouling out.

Purdue made 52 percent of its shots from the field in the first half as it led 29-28 at the break. Minnesota connected on 54.5 percent of its field goal attempts but attempted three fewer shots than Purdue.

After a back-and-forth second period, the Boilermakers went up by two with 31 seconds left after Hammons made a pair of free throws. With just one second remaining Hollins nailed a jumper to tie the game at 60-60 and send it to overtime.

The home team went on a 4-0 run to start the first extra frame but Mathieu answered for the Golden Gophers. With under a minute left, Mathieu scored four straight points, all on free throws, to tie the game up at 64-64. Johnson attempted a shot with two seconds but failed to convert, sending the game to double overtime.

Both teams again only scored four points apiece in the second bonus session. With 2:38 on the clock Walker made a layup to tie the game at 68-68 and from there they both went scoreless.

The third overtime stanza went back-and-forth until Hammons made a layup with 1:01 left to put Purdue up one. The Boilermakers knocked down two free throws later in the frame to go up three and seal the win.

In a game that featured 11 ties and 17 lead changes, Purdue did a better job on the glass as it outrebounded the Golden Gophers, 50-40, pulling down 23 at the offensive end alone.
