GAME NOTES: The Indiana Hoosiers hope to climb even closer to the Top-25 this evening as they host the Samford Bulldogs in non-conference action at Assembly Hall.

On the outside looking in at the moment, with respect to the Associated Press poll, the Hoosiers are shooting for their third win in as many games to open the 2013-14 campaign. The team had no trouble in the opener against Chicago State, 100-72, but on Tuesday night the Hoosiers were pushed to the limit by LIU Brooklyn before pulling out a narrow 73-72 triumph as part of the 2K Sports Classic.

As for the Bulldogs, they are heading out on the road for the second time in as many games after matching up against UT Arlington on Tuesday and bowing to the Mavericks in an 88-75 final. Four days earlier, Samford began the new season on a positive note with a 79-62 romp over Martin Methodist.

This bout marks the first-ever meeting between these two programs.

Samford dug a deep hole for itself in the first half against the Mavericks in the last game, converting a total of just nine field goals, leaving the team with a seven-point deficit at the break. In the second half there was improvement, but while the Bulldogs were knocking down 45.2 percent from the floor, Arlington was hitting 54.8 percent in order to close out the meeting.

Raijon Kelly scored a team-best 18 points, while Connor Miller and Tyler Hood each chipped in 12 points. Tim Williams came up a point shy of a double-double as he cleared 12 rebounds.

After two outings, Samford is putting up a solid 77.0 ppg but shooting only 40.9 percent from the floor. Kelly heads the scoring list with 16.0 ppg, while Williams averages a double-double with 14.0 ppg and a massive 14.0 rpg, his nine offensive rebounds surpassing the total of all but one of his teammates at the moment.

In a game that featured nine ties and eight lead changes, the Hoosiers were taken down to the wire by LIU, needing 51.6 percent shooting from the floor and 6-of-10 behind the 3-point line in the second half to get them over the hump. Noah Vonleh registered a double-double with 17 points and 11 rebounds, his efforts on the glass helping to give the team a 48-35 edge in that department. Will Sheehey accounted for 19 points and six assists, followed by Kevin Ferrell with 17 points for a team that shot a dismal 27.5 percent from the floor and 1-of-16 out on the perimeter in the first half.

Despite being just a 40.9 percent shooter at the moment, Vonleh has more than proven his worth with 14.0 ppg and 12.5 rpg, one of three players scoring at least 14.0 ppg and one of five in double figures. Indiana is putting up 86.5 ppg, but the team has made a disappointing 8-of-34 (.235) beyond the arc. However, the group continues to dominate on the glass with a rebounding edge of close to 20 per game, and it has held the opposition to only 32.4 percent accuracy from the field.

The Hoosiers got a wake-up call the last time out and you had better believe that head coach Tom Crean isn't going to let that happen again versus a lesser team such as the Bulldogs.

Sports Network Predicted Outcome: Indiana 91, Samford 73
