GAME NOTES: The San Francisco Dons try to break back into the win column tonight as they host the Hampton Pirates as part of the Hilltop Challenge in War Memorial Gym.

The Dons have won a total of just four games in 13 opportunities so far in 2010-11 and have yet to post back-to-back victories and it won't happen tonight either because the squad suffered a 69-61 loss to Colorado State in the first round of this tourney on Tuesday night. The setback against CSU was the fourth straight for the Dons and the sixth in the last seven outings overall.

As for the Pirates, they too were supposed to be on the floor on Tuesday in this event, but inclement weather along the East Coast prevented them from making the trip out to California in time, so they had to reschedule their meeting with Dominican University for yesterday. The makeup game ended as a 78-65 victory for Hampton which has won three straight and 10 of the last 11 decisions.

With respect to the all-time series between these two schools on the hardwood, this is the first-ever meeting.

Darrion Pellum scored a game-high 34 points as the Hampton Pirates posted the 13-point win over Dominican yesterday once the teams were finally able to hit the floor in San Francisco. Pellum converted an amazing 9-of-13 from three- point range for the Pirates in the triumph. Kwame Morgan accounted for 20 points, although he shot just 1-of-7 beyond the arc, and Charles Funches logged a double-double with 14 points and 16 rebounds to go along with four assists and four steals in order to offset six turnovers. Hampton, which shot 48.1 percent from the floor on the evening, won the battle of the boards, 38-29, in an effort to overcome 19 turnovers. Pellum is now averaging a team- best 19.5 ppg for the program, even though he is shooting a meager 37.5 percent from the field. Funches is responsible for 13.2 ppg and a team-high 8.8 rpg.

Angelo Caloiaro recorded a double-double with 17 points and 10 rebounds for the Dons on Tuesday, shooting 3-of-6 behind the three-point line, but it wasn't enough for the hosts to keep up against Colorado State in the eight- point decision. Michael Williams accounted for 16 points, but he also turned the ball over five times, while Rashad Green registered a double-double of his own with 12 points and 10 rebounds for a squad that suffered as many miscues (20) as they had field goal conversions. Williams, who had led the team in scoring in five straight games before the meeting with Colorado State, maintains a scoring average of 16.1 ppg as he shoots an impressive 50.9 percent from three-point range. Perris Blackwell checks in with 11.0 ppg and is tops on the glass with almost seven rebounds per outing.

Hampton hasn't beaten a wealth of top-notch competition to this point in the season, but it is clear that Pellum is a player who can get hot at any time and has the potential to carry the squad to victory.
