Stanford hands Oregon third straight loss

Eugene, OR (SportsNetwork.com) - Anthony Brown went 10-of-12 from the field and finished with a career-high 24 points as Stanford edged a slumping 17th- ranked Oregon squad 82-80 at Matthew Knight Arena.

The Ducks got within one inside the final minute, but couldn't move ahead after Stanford missed critical free throws.

Chasson Randle had 23 points for the Cardinal (10-5, 1-2 Pac-12), who got 14 points, six assists, five rebounds and three steals from Dwight Powell.

"We hadn't won a Pac-12 game, so it's good to get one under your belt," said Stanford head coach Johnny Dawkins. "The way we did it was really good because I felt the guys had to really dig deep and make some plays at the end to secure the lead."

Mike Moser scored 24 to pace Oregon (13-3, 1-3), which rolled through its non- conference schedule but has found Pac-12 wins harder to come by. The Ducks have lost three straight against conference foes following their 13-0 start.

A Brown jumper gave Stanford the largest lead of the game at 59-50 with 13:31 to play. The Ducks then hit four 3-pointers, three by Moser, over the next two minutes to trim the deficit to 64-62.

Oregon was never able to regain the lead, but closed the gap to 81-80 during an entertaining sequence. A block by Elgin Cook on Josh Huestis' dunk attempt resulted in a trey in transition from the right corner by Dominic Artis with 21.4 seconds left.

After Brown made 1-of-2 free throws, Johnathan Loyd was short on a pull-up jumper. The Ducks still had an opportunity to tie or win the game when Randle missed both foul shots, but Artis couldn't connect on his drive to the basket in the final seconds.

"We had good looks. Johnathan (Loyd) had an uncontested jumper and Dominic (Artis) got all the way to the rim, we just didn't make them," said Oregon head coach Dana Altman. "We put ourselves in that situation and just didn't get it done."

The first half was also tightly contested as neither team led by more than seven.

Down six with a little more than seven minutes remaining, Stanford used a 20-7 run to go up 41-34 before Oregon's Jason Calliste closed out the frame by sinking three free throws after being fouled on the final shot from beyond the arc.
