GAME NOTES: A couple of teams riding minor losing streaks will try to stop the bleeding on Sunday afternoon, as the Nebraska Cornhuskers take on the Georgia Bulldogs in the final day of competition at the 2013 Charleston Classic.

Nebraska opened the season with three straight wins, all at home, but has since dropped two in a row in this event, first falling to UMass (96-90) on Thursday, and then to UAB (87-74) on Friday. The Cornhuskers return to Lincoln following this contest for two more, beginning with next Saturday's clash against Northern Illinois. Nebraska opens Big Ten Conference play at Iowa on New Year's Eve.

Georgia blew the doors off Wofford (72-52) in its season opener, but has lost three-in-a-row since, the most recent setback coming on Friday in a narrow 83-81 final versus Temple. The day before, it was Davidson that got past the Bulldogs (94-82), and before that is was rival Georgia Tech (80-71). UGA heads home following this bout to kick off a five-game homestand, and the team will begin SEC action at Missouri on Jan. 8, 2014.

These two teams have met twice previously (1985, 1995), with each winning once.

Nebraska hung tough with UAB on Friday, at least in the first half as the Cornhuskers led 34-31 at the break. Unfortunately, the Blazers caught fire in the second half, shooting a sizzling 83 percent from the field in pulling away and eventually taking the 13-point decision. Terran Petteway scored 21 points and grabbed five rebounds for the Huskers, who shot 43.1 percent from the field and also got double-digits efforts from Shavon Shields (11 points), Deverell Biggs (11) and Walter Pitchford (10). A 41-28 rebounding deficit, along with a 24-12 disadvantage in points from the foul line did Nebraska in, and the Huskers simply couldn't contain UAB's Chad Frazier (32 points).

For the season, Petteway leads the team with his 17.0 ppg, while Shields (14.4 ppg, 5.2 rpg) and Biggs (12.3 ppg) have proven themselves to be consistent contributors as well. The team as a whole is averaging 77.6 ppg, doing a decent job of knocking down its 3-point tries (.367), while yielding 68.4 ppg and coming up with nearly twice as many turnovers as it commits (15.0 to 8.4 tpg).

Georgia trailed Temple by 13 at halftime, but rallied to make a game of it, only to fall short in the end by a scant two points. The Bulldogs got 21 points from Kenny Gaines, thanks to his 8-of-12 shooting effort, 19 from Charles Mann, who hit all nine of his free throws, and 10 from Marcus Thornton, but those efforts went for naught as the team suffered its third straight loss. UGA outshot TU, .500 to .482, but connected on only 3-of-10 3- point tries, while the Owls made 11 treys.

While it's only been four games, the 'Dawgs need to show dramatic improvement in multiple areas, not the least of which is long-range shooting (.302). Even though the 12 turnovers per game the team commits isn't horrendous, stingier play on defense would certainly help as it goads the opposition into only nine miscues per outing. Mann (17.0 ppg, 2.8 apg) is the team's leading scorer and primary playmaker, while Gaines (14.3 ppg, 3.8 rpg) and Nemanja Djurisic (12.5 ppg, 4.5 rpg) have shown their worth as well.

Both teams are likely to be down a bit as they seek a stoppage to their respective losing streaks. Expect the Bulldogs, with Mann and Gaines leading the way, to end their slide and get back to a positive frame of mind as they head back to Athens to open a lengthy home stand.
