NCAA Game Summary - Stanford at Connecticut

(Wednesday, December 18th)

Final Score: Stanford 53, (10) Connecticut 51

Hartford, CT (SportsNetwork.com) - Chasson Randle had 22 points and Stanford beat No. 10 Connecticut 53-51 on Wednesday to hand the Huskies their first loss of the season.

UConn -- knocking off some rust after 11 days without a game -- had a 10-point lead at halftime but was held to just 13 points in the last 20 minutes.

Still, the Huskies had a couple of chances to take the lead near the end but Shabazz Napier missed a long jumper on one possession and gave the ball up on the last touch to Omar Calhoun, whose 3-point try about 10 feet beyond the arc hit the rim at the buzzer.

Josh Huestis scored 13 points with 10 rebounds for the Cardinal (8-2), who have won three in a row since falling to Pittsburgh on Nov. 26. Dwight Powell had 10 points and 15 boards in the victory.

DeAndre Daniels scored 15 points and Napier had 12 to lead the Huskies (9-1), who last played Dec. 6. They were trying to go 10-0 for the fifth time in nine years and first time since 2010-11, when they won the NCAA title.

The Huskies shot just 5-of-31 (16.1 percent) in the second half.

"I can't even blame it on the layoff," said UConn coach Kevin Ollie. "We came out, we played well, had a 10-point lead at halftime. Came back in the first three minutes and pushed it up to 13 and then, like we've been doing, we play in spurts and we let the team back in.

"Once they smelled that they can play with us, they took it to us."

The Huskies had their biggest lead on a Niels Giffey layup that made it 43-30 with under 17 minutes to play but Stanford scored the next 14 points to go ahead, sparked by back-to-back 3s from Anthony Brown and Randle.

Randle scored eight during the surge, including a three-point play to make it 44-43 Stanford with less than 11 minutes remaining.

UConn went more than six minutes without a point until Napier's jumper stopped the Stanford run.

A three-point Cardinal lead was cut to one when Daniels stretched to put back a missed Giffey 3-point try with 2:07 remaining -- UConn's final points of the game.

Napier missed back-to-back 3-point tries, then his long jumper inside the line after Huestis went 1-for-2 on foul shots. Huestis missed the front end of another 1-and-1 with 7.7 ticks left and Napier dribbled across midcourt before passing to Calhoun for his missed try at the buzzer.
