GAME NOTES: IUPU-Ft Wayne tries to put an end to a two-game slide tonight as the Mastodons entertain the Dartmouth Big Green in non-conference play.

Since winning five straight and six of seven outings against some very questionable competition, the Mastodons have come out on the losing end in back-to-back decisions, both on the road. First, on Nov. 29 the team bowed to Illinois, albeit by just two points (57-55), and then earlier this week was handed a 94-87 setback by Miami-Ohio.

Meanwhile the Big Green, in the midst of a four-game road trip, saw their brief two-game win streak come to an end two nights ago with a 64-57 loss to Northern Illinois.

The Mastodons have won both of the previous meetings with Dartmouth, the latest coming last season in a 70-66 final.

Trailing by as many as 14 points in the first half, Dartmouth responded to actually take a lead in the second half against NIU, before falling back into the loss column. Gabas Maldunas led all players with 18 points on 8-of-14 shooting, adding eight rebounds for Dartmouth, but also turning the ball over five times. Alex Mitola and John Golden chipped in with 13 and 12 points, respectively, as they combined to shoot only 4-of-14 behind the 3-point line.

Through five games the leading scorer for the Big Green is Mitola with his 13.0 ppg, as he shoots a solid 40.7 percent from beyond the arc. Maldunas is not only good for 11.4 ppg, he is also first on the unit with 10.4 rpg and that has served to provide the squad with a rebounding advantage of nearly nine per game versus the competition.

After giving up just 57 points to Illinois a little over a week ago, the Mastodons were touched for a season-high 94 points by the RedHawks on Tuesday night. Offensively, IUPU-Ft Wayne listed five players in double figures, with Michael Kibiloski leading the way with 17 points, followed by Mo Evans with 16 off the bench. Steve Forbes responded with 14 points and seven rebounds, while Joe Reed and Joe Edwards both tallied 10 points, the latter coming up with seven of the unit's 20 assists as well.

After missing several games to begin the season, Luis Jacobo has asserted himself as the top overall scorer for IUPU-Ft Wayne with his 13.3 ppg, his 5.1 rpg placing him second on that list behind only Reed who supplements his 5.9 rpg with 10.0 ppg. Forbes checks in with 12.1 ppg, shooting 66.2 percent from the field, but he has fouled out of four contests already and has 24 turnovers, against a feeble two assists.

Obviously the Mastodons can score points, but that generally happens when they follow the tempo set by the opposition. If Dartmouth chooses to slow the pace then the visitors might have a fighting chance.

Sports Network Predicted Outcome: Dartmouth 71, IUPU-Ft Wayne 67
