GAME NOTES: The 2K Sports Classic subregional at Calihan Hall concludes on Sunday afternoon, as the host Detroit Titans take on the Stony Brook Seawolves.

Stony Brook has split its first two games of this event, with a Friday night loss to Toledo (103-99) followed by a Saturday afternoon win against Florida Atlantic (67-61) to raise its season record to 4-2. The Seawolves held an advantage over FAU for most of the game, and while the Owls briefly took a one-point lead with 14:30 to play, Stony Brook pulled ahead for good with a 9-2 run. The team put forth a lackluster shooting effort in the win, both from the field (22-of-59) and the foul line (22-of-36), but to help make up for those deficiencies it took care of the basketball with just nine turnovers while holding FAU to a mere 30.2 percent shooting. Jameel Warney was the catalyst with a career-high in both points (23) and rebounds (19), while Eric McAlister (12 points, seven rebounds) and Dave Coley (10 points, even rebounds) were also impressive.

Detroit is 3-3 on the season after splitting its two games in this event, as it defeated FAU handily on Friday night (77-44), before falling to Toledo in heartbreaking fashion on Saturday (80-78). The Titans appeared to be in complete control against the Rockets, as they led by 19 with under 15 minutes left to play, but TU gradually chipped away at the deficit. Detroit still held a one-point lead with six seconds remaining, but Julius Brown converted a three-play play to hand the Titans the devastating loss. Detroit, which shot just 7-of-20 from the field in the second half, was led by Juwan Howard, Jr. and his 23 points. Anton Wilson came off the bench to net 16 points, while Carlton Brundidge added 10 points, albeit on a terrible night from the field (2-of-10).

These two schools have never before met on the hardwood.

The Seawolves have been stellar shooting the ball in the early going, as they drain greater than 46 percent of their field goal attempts for 77.5 points per game. Anthony Jackson is typically the top scoring option with 19.0 points per game, and he does the majority of his damage from 3-point range (17-of-39). Warney's big day on Saturday allowed his numbers to ascend to 17.3 points and 10.3 rebounds per game, and he has connected on 64.2 percent of his tries from the floor. Carson Puriefoy (11.5 ppg) rounds out Stony Brook's double-digits scorers.

Despite shooting a lackluster 40.5 percent from the field, Detroit is still able to net 74.2 points per game (4.7 points more than its opponents) thanks largely to the positive margins it boasts in the rebounding (+1.9) and turnover (+1.0) battles. Howard, Jr. is the catalyst from the frontcourt, as he tallies 17.7 points and 7.2 rebounds per game, and he has been impressive at the free-throw line (19-of-23). Brundidge (10.0 ppg) is the only other player to average in double figures, however Matthew Grant, Jarod Williams and Anton Wilson all put up at least 8.8 points per contest.

Detroit will surely be reeling after its second-half meltdown on Saturday, but if it can put the past to bed, it should be able to end the weekend on a high note against a Stony Brook squad that has been shaky at the defensive end of the floor.
