NCAA Game Summary - UNC Wilmington at Delaware

(Saturday, February 1st)

Final Score: Delaware 66, UNC Wilmington 65

Newark, DE (SportsNetwork.com) - Carl Baptiste hit the game-winning basket with under 30 seconds to play as the Delaware Blue Hens escaped with a 66-65 victory over the Seahawks of UNC Wilmington in Colonial Athletic Association action at the Bob Carpenter Center.

Baptiste finished with 10 points and eight rebounds for the Blue Hens (16-7, 8-0 CAA) as they extended their win streak to 10 in a row. Devon Saddler shot only 4-of-15 from the floor and turned the ball over six times, but finished with a team-best 15 points, to go along with six boards and five assists, while Davon Usher pitched in with 13 points.

The Seahawks (6-16, 0-7), still winless in conference play, were paced by Cedrick Williams who responded with 18 points and eight rebounds before fouling out. Addison Spruill chipped in 16 points and six boards off the bench for the visitors as they dropped their 11th straight decision.

Both teams made only nine field goals in the first half, but thanks to four 3- pointers in the period it was Delaware that moved out to a 28-26 advantage at the break.

A seesaw battle throughout, one that featured 16 ties and 18 lead changes, the Hens remained in the hunt as they missed all but one of eight 3-pointers in the second half.

After missing several crucial free throws in the final minutes, Baptiste put the Hens up by a point on a short hook shot with 26 seconds remaining. The Seahawks had a chance to regain the lead but had a Dixon jumper blocked by Saddler, who then promptly missed a pair of free throws with a fraction of a second left on the clock.

Despite missing those last two free throws, Saddler still surpassed the 2,000- point mark for his career on the afternoon.

Undefeated in the month of January, this is the first double-digit win streak for the Blue Hens under head coach Monte Ross.
