NCAA Game Summary - Stanford vs. New Mexico

(Friday, March 21st)

Final Score: Stanford 58, New Mexico 53

St. Louis, MO (SportsNetwork.com) - Chasson Randle poured in a team-high 23 points to lead Stanford to a 58-53 win over New Mexico in the second round of the NCAA Tournament on Friday.

Anthony Brown and Stefan Nastic added 10 points apiece, with Brown adding seven boards for the Cardinal (22-12), who will face Kansas in the third round on Sunday.

"We're not satisfied. New Mexico was a great team. And, you know, just take it one game at a time, like you said, 40 minutes away from the Sweet 16," said Brown.

Cameron Bairstow scored a game-high 24 points and pulled down eight rebounds for the Lobos (27-7), who didn't make it past their opening game of the tournament for the second straight season.

New Mexico was upset by then-14th seeded Harvard last year.

Randle buried a 3-pointer to give Stanford a 48-45 edge with just under nine minutes remaining. After nearly 4 1/2 scoreless minutes, Nastic and Josh Huestis hit back-to-back jumpers for a 52-45 cushion, but it would be the last field goals Stanford would have the rest of the game.

Bairstow hit a short jumper to pull the Lobos within five with 3:18 left, but Randle knocked down a pair of free throws to stretch the spread to 54-47.

With 1:06 remaining, Hugh Greenwood nailed a 3-pointer, and after Randle lost control of the ball with 50.3 seconds left, Kirk drew a foul and converted both free throws to get New Mexico within 54-52.

The Lobos then fouled Robbie Lemons on the inbounds pass. Lemons, who had shot just 12 free throws all season entering the contest, calmly sank a pair from the line to make it 56-52.

Kendall Williams missed a 3-pointer on the other end and Bairstow appeared to have secured the rebound and had it knocked out, but a video review determined that Bairstow's arm was hit and he was the last player to touch the ball.

Randle was fouled on the inbounds, but caught Greenwood in the face with an elbow. After a video review he was called for a Flagrant Foul. Randle sank both of his free throw stemming from the foul, but Williams went 1-for-2 from the line for the flagrant before missing a 3-pointer as Stanford held on for the win.

Earlier, Nastic's layup at 18:39 sparked a 17-0 run as Stanford took a 20-4 lead. Russell scored nine of the final 11 points on the flurry

"We allowed them two easy layups and didn't have very good defensive pressure. I thought our guys were tuned in on what we were doing," said New Mexico coach Craig Neal. "We had tried to rest them the last two days and they played with high energy and played with toughness, but, you know, we just got off to a bad start. We couldn't make any shots. And they got some easy ones."

Deshawn Delaney then scored five straight points and Greenwood followed with a 3-pointer to pull the Lobos within eight, 20-12, with 11:08 remaining.

Anthony Brown's 3-pointer stretched the Cardinal lead to 14, 28-14, but New Mexico closed the half on an 8-0 run to make it 32-27 at the break.

Game Notes

Stanford returned to the tournament for the first time since 2008 ... the Cardinal are 22-15 all-time in the NCAA Tournament ... Stanford holds a 3-1 lead in the all-time series ... New Mexico shot 36.5 percent from the floor and was a dismal 4-for-21 shooting from 3-point range.
