GAME NOTES: The San Jose State Spartans finally get their 2013-14 basketball schedule off the ground as they tangle with the Santa Clara Broncos in non- conference action at the Leavey Center.

If it were not for a split of 12 non-conference games, the Spartans would have been one of the weakest teams in all of college basketball a season ago. Still, San Jose State enters the 2013-14 campaign with the distinction of having lost 14 consecutive outings.

The team has not won since topping New Orleans (71-64), a team that only a few years ago dropped down from Division I status, back on Jan. 5. Unfortunately, with the team performing so poorly, winning only nine total games in each of the last two seasons, head coach George Nessman was let go and Dave Wojcik was brought in to revive the program, a daunting task for sure.

As for the Broncos, they have already gotten off on the right foot thanks to an 84-39 blowout victory against Bethesda University at home last Friday night. Santa Clara is coming off a 2012-13 campaign in which it posted a 26-12 record and closed with three straight games against George Mason as part of the College Basketball Invitational, which the Broncos won with an 80-77 victory in the deciding game.

The teams met up last season at The Event Center in San Jose, with the Broncos posting a resounding 75-54 win which means the all-time series now numbers 78-29 in favor of Santa Clara.

Heading into last season, SJSU had James Kinney as a potential all-conference performer, but while he scored 20.6 ppg, he ended up appearing in just 14 games before being suspended in February because of academics, reportedly. Needless to say, losing Kinney threw the team into a tailspin and even now it is difficult to see what direction it is heading in with senior forward Chris Cunningham (10.7 ppg) the top returning scorer.

The only player to start every game last season, Cunningham was also first on the glass with nine rebounds per outing. D.J. Brown, another solid starter for the fractured group, can score the ball (9.2 ppg) and help out teammates (107 assists), but his 30.3 percent shooting from the floor is something that has to be addressed moving forward.

In their opener, the Broncos were far from lenient as they held the visitors to only eight field goals in the first half, matching Bethesda's turnover total in the period. In the second half it was more of the same as Santa Clara allowed eight made baskets and forced another 11 miscues by the visitors, en route to a very comfortable victory.

Jared Brownridge was the game's leading scorer with 25 points, shooting 5- of-10 from 3-point range which alone was better than Bethesda (4-of-12) on the night. Jalen Richard pitched in with 15 points, Jerry Brown 13 and Julian Clarke 11 points in 19 minutes off the bench as the Broncos shot close to 50 percent from the field and turned the ball over just eight times.

Santa Clara needs to be careful not to get too excited about the blowout win in the first game of the season. While SJSU may have revenge as a motivating factor after losing to the Broncos last year, the chances of the Spartans keeping up this time around are slim as well.
