NCAA Game Summary - Purdue at Northwestern

(Tuesday, January 21st)

Final Score: Northwestern 63, Purdue 60 (2OT)

Evanston, IL (SportsNetwork.com) - Tre Demps and Drew Crawford each scored 19 points as the Northwestern Wildcats outlasted the Purdue Boilermakers in double overtime for a 63-60 victory in a Big Ten marathon at Welsh-Ryan Arena.

JerShon Cobb added 15 points for Northwestern (10-10, 3-4 Big Ten), which has won its last four.

A.J. Hammons hung up a double-double of 17 points and 10 rebounds, but was also guilty of seven turnovers for Purdue (13-6, 3-3), which has lost six of its last eight. Terone Johnson chipped in 16 points and Ronnie Johnson tallied 12.

Purdue clung to a 23-21 lead at halftime after shooting 34.6 percent from the floor in the first period, which was a bit better than Northwestern (.320).

The Boilermakers led for nearly the entire second half, but couldn't close out the win as Cobb nailed a jumper with 31 seconds to play that tied the score at 46-46 and forced overtime.

After scoring the first three points in the first extra session, the Boilermakers once again failed to hold on, with Demps nailing a 3-pointer with 1:36 left in the period to knot the score at 51-51. The two teams combined to go 0-of-3 the rest of the way, necessitating a second overtime.

An 8-2 run from Northwestern during the first four minutes of the second extra period gave it the separation it needed to pull out the victory.

The Wildcats outscored Purdue in the paint 22-12. The Boilermakers had a 48-42 edge on the boards. The game featured only a single lead change, coming in the second overtime when Crawford hit a jumper with 4:37 to play.
