GAME NOTES: Two teams headed in opposite directions get together on Saturday evening, as the Fordham Rams take on the Richmond Spiders in an Atlantic 10 Conference clash at the Robins Center.

Fordham has lost two in a row and fallen in four of its last five overall. Most recently, the Rams lost to St Bonaventure on Wednesday night at home 76-65. That left them in a four-way tie for last place in the A-10. . Richmond has been much more fortunate, winning two straight and six of its last eight overall, including a 75-58 victory over Duquesne in Pittsburgh, also on Wednesday night. The Spiders are tied for fourth place in the conference standings.

Richmond won the first matchup between the two this season, a 77-74 overtime thriller in the Bronx on Jan 11. Richmond has won the last seven games in the series, and owns a 12-7 lead all-time.

Branden Frazier and Mandell Thomas both scored 20 points, Frazier added a team-high seven assists, while Jon Severe chipped in with 13 points in the loss to St. Bonaventure. The Rams got as close as three early in the half, but the Bonnies were able to pull away and hold off the home team down the stretch to escape with the win. The Bonnies dominated the front court, outscoring the Rams in the paint, 44-26, and outrebounding them, 40-28. SBU forced 17 Fordham turnovers and converted them into 24 points.

Severe is the top overall scorer for the Rams with his 19.0 ppg, although he has been shooting a woeful 34.0 percent from the field, which is actually below his 37.7 percent showing behind the 3-point line on the season. Frazier (17.8 ppg) and Thomas (13.1 ppg) have combined with Severe to make good on 130 of the team's 163 3-point baskets. The Rams are allowing a league-worst 78.3 ppg, but they do lead the A-10 in free-throw percentage (.731).

Kendall Anthony scored 20 points, ShawnDre' Jones added 13, Terry Allen finished with a dozen and Alonzo Nelson-Ododa scored 10, all of which was needed in the Spiders' road win over Duquesne. Richmond opened the game on a 17-3 run and took a 39-27 lead into intermission. The Spiders were able to close out the game by outscoring the Dukes 19-3 from the free-throw line after halftime.

With the news last week that senior Cedrick Lindsay, who led the Spiders and was third in the A-10 in scoring at 18.2 ppg, will miss the remainder of the season after tearing a meniscus in both knees, Anthony (15.5 ppg) is now the focal point of the offense. The junior guard is averaging 26.3 ppg in the last three contests, and has scored in double figures in 16 consecutive games. He leads the league in scoring in conference games at 19.6 ppg. Allen (8.6 ppg, 5.5 rpg) is shooting 50.6 percent from the field, while Nelson-Ododa (6.3 ppg, 5.3 rpg) has 59 blocks to his credit. The Spiders have the second-lowest point total (69.0 ppg) in the conference, but the second-best scoring defense at 65.5 ppg and their perimeter defense has been spectacular as teams are shooting a mere 28.5 percent from 3-point range, also second in the A-10. Taking good care of the ball this season, the Spiders are 26th in the nation in turnover margin (+3.0)

The Spiders have played well after losing one of their top weapons, which can be attributed to the emergence of Lindsay as a breakout star, and also to their excellent defense. The Rams have been giving up a ton of points, so look for Richmond to eschew the Southern hospitality and take advantage of the visitors.
