GAME NOTES: The Canisius Golden Griffins shoot for a second straight win, as they challenge the Siena Saints in Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference action at the Times Union Center.

The Griffs came into this week having lost back-to-back decisions against Manhattan and Iona, but on Friday night the squad landed back in the win column with a 71-65 triumph over Niagara on the road. With the win the team moved to 11-4 in MAAC play and remained in the top half of the standings.

As for the Saints, now a game under .500 in conference, they too were in action on Valentine's Day, but in their case they came up short in a 65-64 final versus Marist on the road. The setback was the third in the last four outings for the program.

Canisius won the first meeting of the season back in early December by a score of 93-78 at home, which means the all-time series now numbers 51-39 in favor of the Saints.

Billy Baron took charge of the offense for the Golden Griffins two nights ago, converting 10-of-16 shots from the field and 11-of-14 at the free-throw line in order to post a game-high 34 points in the win against Niagara on the road. Baron also accounted for six rebounds and five assists in order to offset his six turnovers. The only other double-digit scorer for the visitors, as they shot a collective 4-of-20 behind the 3-point line, was Chris Perez with 17.

One of three players to have started every game for Canisius this season, Baron is generating 24.0 ppg thanks to 44.4 percent accuracy behind the 3- point line. Baron is also one of the nation's best shooters at the free-throw line with 89.0 percent accuracy on 181 attempts. Perez pitches in with 11.9 ppg and Jordan Heath another 10.4 ppg as the squad puts up a healthy 77.4 ppg, but at the same time allows 74.3 ppg.

Siena led by as many as nine points late in the first half against the Red Foxes, but the team saw a 14-point swing in a span of just seven minutes as the Saints eventually came up short in the one-point decision. Lavon Long registered a double-double with 13 points and 11 rebounds, but he shot only 3- of-13 from the floor. Marquis Wright posted 20 points and Brett Bisping 11 and eight rebounds.

Bisping is currently second on the team in scoring with 10.0 ppg, shooting a solid 55.2 percent from the floor, trailing only Rob Poole who has delivered 14.6 ppg, thanks in part to his team-best 46 3-pointers. However, this is a group that doesn't rely much on the perimeter threat and it tends to show, as they average just four triples per contest.

With Baron on their side and having already dismantled Siena previously this season, the Golden Griffs should feel confident in their trip to Albany this afternoon.
