GAME NOTES: The Oregon State Beavers' first road contest of the season will come in the form of a cross-country trek, as they take on the Maryland Terrapins on Sunday evening.

Oregon State's 2013-14 campaign started off in disappointing fashion, as it dropped a 78-73 contest at home last Sunday to Coppin State, but it was able to pull even at 1-1 following a 79-73 victory over Portland State on Wednesday. The Beavers, who went just 14-18 a season ago, won't play again until Nov. 26 at home against SIU Edwardsville.

Maryland has also gotten off to a 1-1 start this season, although its loss was much more acceptable than Oregon State's as it dropped a neutral-site affair to Connecticut in heartbreaking fashion in the opener on Nov. 8, 78-77. The Terps took out their frustrations on Abilene Christian this past Wednesday at home with a 67-44 rout.

This bout marks the first-ever meeting between these two programs that are separated by nearly 3,000 miles.

The Beavers were shaky in their last game, as they saw a double-digit, first- half advantage against Portland State disappear late in the second half, but they were able to hold off the Pilots down the stretch for their first win of the season. Their shooting effort was outstanding in the triumph (.545), but they connected on just 3-of-13 from 3-point range and nearly allowed Portland State to pull off the upset by not taking advantage of their ample free-throw attempts (16-of-29). Roberto Nelson (24 points) scored in double figures for the 19th straight game, and he also contributed with seven assists and four steals. Angus Brandt (13 points, 10 rebounds) and Devon Collier (11 points, 11 rebounds) both tallied double-doubles. Oregon State is up to its old habits through two games this season, both in scoring (76.0 ppg) and surrendering points (75.5 ppg). Although it's early, Nelson is the nation's third-leading scorer at 30.0 points per game, while still finding time to hand out 5.0 assists per contest. Brandt (13.0 ppg, 8.5 rpg) and Collier (11.0 ppg, 11.0 rpg) are mainstays in the frontcourt.

The Terps appeared to be in trouble early in the second half of their latest contest, as they trailed Abilene Christian by six with 14:12 to play, but they erased all doubts by scoring 29 points from there to pull away. They outshot Abilene Christian from the field, 49.1 percent for 31.5 percent, and had a clear advantage in the rebounding battle as well (41-23). Jake Layman sparked the late fury with 14 of his game-high 19 points in the second half, while Charles Mitchell (15 points, 11 rebounds) was also outstanding in a reserve role. Evan Smotrycz and Nick Faust both scored 11 points in the victory. Maryland, which averages 72.0 points per game on 45.5 percent field goal shooting this season, is paced by Layman's 16.0 points per game, with most of his damage coming from 3-point range (6-of-11). Faust, Mitchell and Smotrycz all score at least 12.0 points per game, while Dez Wells has handed out nine assists.

Although Oregon State is an intriguing squad with some dynamic scoring options, it has yet to impress this season against inferior competition, and after a long trip east, the Beavers have a difficult time tackling a very good Maryland squad on its home floor.

Sports Network Predicted Outcome: Maryland 77, Oregon State 64
