NCAA Game Summary - Iowa State at Oklahoma State

(Monday, February 3rd)

Final Score: (16) Iowa State 98, (19) Oklahoma State 97 (3-OT)

Stillwater, OK (SportsNetwork.com) - No Cyclone was even born the last time Iowa State took down Oklahoma State in Stillwater.

Not even 24-year-old DeAndre Kane, who was born a year after.

Kane had 26 points, nine rebounds and nine assists and No. 16 Iowa State edged No. 19 Oklahoma State 98-97 in three overtimes on Monday night.

Melvin Ejim nearly won the game in regulation, but his putback dunk on Kane's missed 3-pointer came after the buzzer. Naz Long nailed a game-tying 3- pointer with two seconds left in the second overtime to force the third extra session.

Ejim tallied 22 points and 13 rebounds for the Cyclones (17-4, 5-4 Big 12), who snapped their 18-game losing streak in Stillwater. It was their first win there since Mar. 2, 1988 (97-88).

"It would have been a very difficult loss fighting three overtimes and walking out of here with a loss. I'm proud of our guys for finding a way to win it," Iowa State head coach Fred Hoiberg said.

Le'Bryan Nash netted 26 points to go with 10 boards for Oklahoma State (16-6, 4-5), which has dropped three straight.

"We had our chances," Cowboys head coach Travis Ford said. "We didn't rebound the basketball at crucial times. Obviously, Iowa State made big shots and had big rebounds. We didn't rebound when it counted. We didn't make a couple shots when it counted, but the guys played hard."

Marcus Smart registered 20 points and seven rebounds, but had just one point in the first half when he took only one shot from the floor.

The Cowboys led 95-93 with under a minute left in the third overtime when Long blocked Markel Brown from behind on a drive to the bucket. The turnover led to a fastbreak and Monte Morris nailed a wide-open triple from the left corner with 42 ticks on the clock to put Iowa State in front, 96-95.

Nash then threw the ball away at the other end and Long sunk a pair of free throws with 21.8 seconds to play to extend the margin to three.

Brown drove in for a quick dunk and Brian Williams knocked the ball off Long on the ensuing inbounds to give Oklahoma State the ball back with 11 seconds remaining.

Smart missed a one-footed fadeaway, but the Cowboys retained possession following a tie-up. Nash was short on a left baseline jumper at the buzzer.

Iowa State led 36-32 at halftime, but Smart's driving layup capped a 15-3 Cowboys run to stake them to a 67-62 cushion with 6:04 to go in regulation. The Cyclones countered when Matt Thomas finished off a 9-2 swing to give them a 71-69 edge with 3:17 left in the second half.

Brian Williams split a pair of foul shots to knot the game at 83-83 with 28 ticks left in the first overtime and Brown blocked Morris' potentially game- winning 3-pointer at the other end.

Long's trey in double overtime came after Nash netted six straight points, which gave the Cowboys an 89-86 spread. Thomas misfired on a right wing triple, but Kane gathered in the offensive rebound and raced quickly to the 3- point line. He then fed Long at the top of the arc and he was able to get his shot off before Phil Forte could close out.

Game Notes

Iowa State's triumph was its sixth over a ranked opponent this season ... The Cowboys were without reserve guard Stevie Clark, who was kicked off the team after being arrested for the second time in just over a month.
