Pitt outlasts Va. Tech in double overtime

Pittsburgh, PA (SportsNetwork.com) - Cameron Wright posted 18 points and six rebounds, as No. 25 Pitt fended off Virginia Tech, 62-57, in double overtime at Petersen Events Center.

James Robinson added 16 points along with four steals and Josh Newkirk poured in 11 for the Panthers (20-4, 8-3 ACC), who have won back-to-back games in extra time after dropping two in a row in advance of a trip to Syracuse on Wednesday.

Jarell Eddie came up with 15 points for the Hokies (8-15, 1-10), losers of 10 straight contests. Devin Wilson had 10 but turned the ball over a game-worst seven times, while Cadarian Raines pulled down a game-high 11 rebounds in defeat.

"They were really active on defense with their hands and their hedges on ball- screens," Wilson remarked. "I thought their defense was really good today."

Wright connected on two key free throws with two minutes played in the second OT, giving Pitt a 56-54 edge. Ben Emelogu missed a trey and Tech was forced to foul, giving Wright two more chances at the charity stripe which he did not waste.

Eddie came up short on his next try and Wilson made just 1-of-2 for a three- point spread with two minutes left, but Newkirk made one of his two tries at the line ahead of Wilson's pair which drew the Hokies within 59-57 and 30 seconds showing.

Lamar Patterson then missed his first try from the line, but Raines missed his easy tip and Wilson's foul sent Newkirk to the charity stripe to sink the deciding two shots.

"It's great to see our guys make free throws down the stretch and make the plays," Pittsburgh head coach Jamie Dixon said. "It's good to see that."

Joey van Zegeren made two from the charity stripe with 40 seconds left in regulation and Virginia Tech led 48-44, but the Hokies defense allowed Robinson a contested three which drew a foul and the completed free shot tied the score at 48-48.

Wilson sent the game into a second extra session when he sank two foul shots inside of a minute left in overtime.

Pitt led 13-5 before the five-minute mark of the contest thanks to a Michael Young jumper, but Virginia Tech led 14-13 on a three from Emelogu. Pitt went back up 18-14, only to see the Hokies go ahead 22-21 when Eddie was good from beyond the arc.

The visitors were down just 27-26 at the break after a van Zegeren layup.

Game Notes

Pitt participated in its first multiple-OT contest since beating West Virginia in a three-overtime thriller on Feb. 12, 2010 ... Virginia Tech owned a 43-28 edge on the glass, but committed 20 turnovers to 11 for Pitt, who converted their foes' miscues into 21 points.
